Phil began his career as an in-house assistant at Sarm where, for a period of three years, he worked on a large variety of sessions, including two albums with Trevor Horn ("Seal IV" by Seal and "Dear Catastophe Waitress" by Belle and Sebastian). In 2003 Phil freelanced as an engineer, Protools engineer and assistant at both Strongroom and Miloco Studios.

Phil then joined Whitfield Street Studios in 2004 and built up a reputation as a very competent Engineer, Protools engineer and assistant. While at Whitfield Street Studios Phil worked on such diverse projects as The Darkness latest album, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's original film soundtrack for "Phantom Of The Opera" and Prodigy's album "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned".
