staff profile

Joe Hirst

# In another triumphant feature for MILC, we're going to introduce you, one by one, to Miloco's wonderful array of staff. A veritable smorgasbord of handsome, pretty, funny, delightful, civic-minded, predominantly well groomed, insightful, dexterous and oh-so-talented individuals, it's a wonder gathering them together under just one roof is legal...

September sees us flashing a strobe light upon the seedy underbelly of 'Gentleman' Joe Hirst to see just what lies beneath that unflappable exterior:

Job Title & Description:

JH: "Assistant Engineer/Engineer."

Recent Clients/Projects:

JH: "DJ Shadow, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Bloc Party."

Favourite Clients:

JH: "Anyone who really cares and believes in what they are doing but doesn't take themselves too seriously."

Favourite studio-based anecdote:

JH: "A member of a noted grime crew brought in a very large and mean-looking dog to a session in The Toyshop. It seemed fairly friendly until the MC went into the boothÉ The dog stayed in the control room and duly freaked out, running round barking at everyone - clearing the whole room and leaving me with the dog! The MC came and saved me and finished his verse with it in the booth with him."

What's the most time you've spent in the studio on an ultimately pointless task?

JH: "Not sure exactly, nothing too serious, making ten cups of tea for a group who decide to go the pub instead."

Plans for the future?

JH: "Hoping to carry on engineering on a broad musical range of projects and get involved with some really good bands early in their career. May also have some remixes and collaborations to get my teeth stuck into."

What was the last film you saw...and what did you think?

JH: "Saw Charlie and the Chocolate factory recently, thought it was really good. Always loved the book when I was a kid and the new film seems to offer a cool interpretation. Johnny Depp plays Willy Wonka brilliantly but alas the Oomper Loompers may not be to everyone's liking."

Last gig you went to...?

JH: "Glastonbury. Magic Numbers were amazing, most hyped crowd I saw all weekend."

Last album bought...?

JH: "The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike. Just had a couple of listens - one of the best things I've heard this year. A mad mix of styles and sounds that is hard to explain really!"

Knob of the month (which effect/tool is your current favourite)?

JH: "The Coles 4038s we have just got are amazing and get my vote for most duties at the moment."

And, finally, what handful of records are currently buttering your crumpet?

JH: "After much deliberation and in no particular order...
