Milc Image
INTRODUCTION

You vant ze Milc??

You do, don't you? Well in that case an extremely warm welcome back to the magical world of MILC, where the cows don't just stand around in fields munching grass all day, but also sometimes pop into a Miloco recording studio to make a chart-topping record or two.

This is not the case with other studios' clients. There have been worrying reports from the village of Dyffryn Ardudwy in North-West Wales that several rock stars with no association to Miloco have been spotted on all fours taking bites out of the hillside! These musicians have been at it non-stop for months! They've been watching us. They are jealous. They want their own Milc. Good heavens this webzine is having an unexpectedly profound effect on the music industry!

Anyway, back to the much-anticipated ninth issue of this portal of sparkling musical info. We have a healthy mix of musicians to report on, including our main feature with electro soul rocker Ali Love, two new artist profiles with Gillian Glover and Craig Johnston, a chin-wag with the very splendid Miloco engineer Martin Jenkins, plus much more.

The dairy drought is over! Everybody sing, "It's raining Milc, Hallelujah..."

Ali Love

# There's a definite buzz returning to London's musical prowess, with the likes of Jamie T and Lily Allen dominating critical attention, as well as album and single charts. Therefore the scene is perfectly set for one East Ender named Ali Love, who has been one of Miloco's most prolific clients for around a year. As he prepares for the summer release of the debut album he has been working on with Steve Dub and Seggs, MILC managed to catch up with Mr. Love to try and get some answers out of him. Just to clear up, he hadn't been a naughty boy (as far as we are aware), we just wanted to provide you lovely MILC readers with a sneak preview of what might be in store, come release of a potential album of the year, obviously.

You may already have heard the name - Ali released a single last year called 'Lost in the K-hole' which was met with some considerable approval. Perhaps it is a signal that the song used to announce his career - about horse tranquilizers' contribution to British culture - suggests Ali is a socialite songwriter with a certain edge (!) Read on to hear what happened when Ali Love met MILC

Staff profile

Martin Jenkins

#
Now we of course write a lot about the fantastic musicians which come and go to and from our many studios. However they all owe a mammoth amount to the guys who tweak those levels, twist those knobs and push those faders. So as always, MILC like to profile a member of our fantastic team of studio staff who make an invaluable contribution to not only the projects they work on, but to the success of the studios.

This month we are paying tribute to one of our longest-serving staff members, Martin Jenkins. A top Pro Tools engineer, however Martin also excels at Logic, and his expertise is often in demand in studios across France as well as the UK. Step this way: Martin Jenkins profile.
Miloco client watch

Client Watch

MILC's equivalent of Her Majesty's Secret Service, MILCPAC (Milc's Imaginary Losers Carrying Pads And Cameras), have been hard at work spying on and gathering top-secret information on our clients. Top-secret until now that is. Here's this month's Client Watch.

NME Awards conquered by Milocees

# #
Award season is upon us, and so is the time where we start making a tally of the number of awards Miloco have played a part in, not. However we did notice that at on one particular ceremonious occasion, The NME's to be precise, a selection of our clients scrubbed up quite nice. Literally so, The Horrors' Faris Rotter, who won the 'Best Dressed' award with his rather pretty gothic-punk image, which is striking more fear into today's parents than Mick Jagger's pouting lips did back in the day. Further congrats to our favourite Wimbledon ruffian, Jamie T, who most impressively nabbed 'Best Solo Artist', and to The Klaxons, who shook off stiff competition to claim 'Best New Band', leaving us to say, "Bad luck The View, hats off to the Miluskers!"

Hatherley finally speaks of Ash departure

Charlotte Hatherley has spoken for the first time about her exit from the band Ash, over a year ago. Following the release of her second solo album, the widely acclaimed 'The Deep Blue', her announcement outlined how she is still unclear of whether her departure was her decision or that of the three other members of Ash. Charlotte told The Independent, "In the end it was the boys' choice. They wanted to go back to being a three-piece. They knew I wasn't happy in the band any more so they assumed that I'd be fine with the decision. I did find it was a bit weird. I left thinking: 'What just happened there? Did I leave or was I fired?" Charlotte's unhappiness was reportedly caused by Ash's Americanised sound of 2004's 'Meltdown'. Charlotte was using a selection of Miloco's studios throughout 2006, when working on 'The Deep Blue'.

Ditto don't like Moss's game!

Well she hasn't been a Miloco client for long, but the sheer induction of the lady of the moment, Beth Ditto, into the Miloco family deserves a piece in Client Watch. But while we announce The Gossip's recent session at The Garden, we can also tell you of Beth's views on Kate Moss being nominated for 'Sexiest Female' at the New MUSICAL Express awards, which she ended up winning. Preposterous, just because of her 'rock star' boyfriend, she's not even a musician! Well that's Ditto's view anyway. We think she has a point too - imagine if Posh Spice won Player of the Season?

And while we are on The Gossip...

The Gossip #
If you were unaware that The Gossip have been active in the USA since 1999, then I have news for you: The Gossip have been active in the USA since 1999. They have in fact just signed a new record deal in their homeland of America, on Columbia Records imprint, Music With A Twist. MWAT is a label whose purpose is to develop gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and cross-gendered music, and The Gossip are one of the highest profile acts to have yet been added to their roster. Their smash-hit, 'Standing in the Way of Control' is to be released on a MWAT compilation shortly. Anyone thinking up rhymes for MWAT? Disgraceful.

Our very own Outstanding Contribution

# Well, those Mancunian rock-gods Oasis have scooped up an Outstanding Contribution Award at the Brits to add to the trophy cabinet. But would they have ever been in contention if it weren't for the mass-success of 1996's (What's The Story) Morning Glory? Talking of which, that album was partly recorded and completely mixed in our very own Neve Room. Talk about an outstanding contribution to an Outstanding Contribution! A gong is apparently being biked over from Brits HQ, but we heard that nearly 3 weeks ago, leaving us fearful for the driver! Elsewhere in Oasis land, it has been revealed that Noel Gallagher is to become a father for the second time.

Raking it in

# #
The Rakes' Alan Donohoe has gone all David Beckham and become the face of Fred Perry. Seriously. Seemingly eager to become more indie-orientated, the fashion label secured the services of the band's frontman for their global campaign. Might this start a trend across the alternative music industry? We'd love to hear any suggestions for other fashion contracts with musicians. Log on to the Miloco forum at www.miloco.co.uk/forum and put down some suggestions under the relevant topic. Go on, get those comical juices flowing!!

Sunshine Underground push Klaxons buttons, literally

# # During a Klaxons DJ set on the NME Awards Tour, Sunshine Underground's Craig Wellington reportedly attempted to sabotage the DJ booth by pressing a load of buttons on the mixer, and subsequently got removed from the area. Craig then turned his thoughts to how he might increase his blood alcohol level, and commenced to climb behind the bar to start pouring himself drinks. Tut tut, Craig, tut tut, although it must be said that we here at Miloco love to hear a good old debauchery tale involving our clients. We have however replaced our order on the soon-to-be beer distributor at Leroy Street, with one that has an extra sturdy locking system. Call it 'a precaution'.

Bloc's International Party

Although surprisingly missing out on a UK number 1 entry with second album 'A Weekend In The City', Bloc Party's foreign allegiances seem to have been bowled over by their rip-roaring second album. With no less than 10 international top 10 entries, including top 5s in the UK, Japan, Australia, Belgium and Germany has confirmed the South Londoners as one of Britain's biggest exports of recent years. However perhaps the most impressive was a no. 12 entry across the pond where the Yanks have taken quite a liking to the Bloc boys, which is great news for all limey musicians, would you agree?? Well done boys.

Lomo 19A19 Valve Microphone by Martin Jenkins

# Now anyone who doesn't know what a LOMO 19A19 is obviously hasn't been reading our newsletters carefully enough!! As stated in last month's newsletter, we recently added this superb microphone to the equipment collection at The Square on the recommendation of producer Ben Hillier. One man who certainly does know what a LOMO 19A19 is (we hope, otherwise we picked the wrong guy to write this review!) is Martin Jenkins. Well we'd pestered him enough with his staff profile, why would we stop there? Martin Jenkins reviews the LOMO 19A19.

New Artist Profiles

Welcome back to the New Artist Profile feature of MILC, where in each issue we shine some light on new musicians who came to us with nothing, and left with the kind of recorded music rock 'n' roll deity is made from. This time we have chosen two solo artists, who go by the names of Gillian Glover and Craig Johnston. They talk us through the work they have been involving themselves in, and then they get to the really serious stuff: jokes engraved on tombstones, punch-ups between genetically enhanced beasts, Ian Brown causing havoc on a moped, the list is endless.

Gillian Glover

Gillian Glover

Gillian Glover is multi-influential. Of course her brilliant bluesy-folk-rock says it all, but her ideas to send her ashes up in a firework? Now that is a dead-cert trendsetter. Intrigued? Well read on...

Craig Johnston

Craig Johnston

Craig Johnston is an intelligent chap. He has particular knowledge on the primal instincts of giant monkeys. He is also a singer-songwriter, and one to look out for, without fail. Craig Johnston profile.
Big Artist Spotlight

The Chemical Brothers

# Our spotlight moves on from two very new and very exciting artists, to two more not so new but just as exciting artists. Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons have been strongly linked to Miloco Studios since the beginning of their illustrious careers, where they used The Toyshop to record their first album. They then had their own programming room at Leroy Street which then became the new Toyshop, and have been using our fantastic Neve VR room to mix their records for several years. They love our studios and we love their company.

When Tom and Ed join their supreme musical forces, they in fact go by another name. You might well have heard of them. This issue's Big Band Spotlight is shining ever so brightly on the one and only Chemical Brothers.

Friends of Miloco

Resource Studio

# In the last issue of MILC, we introduced this feature, 'Friends of Miloco' as we thought it would be more-than appropriate to shine some light on, well, a friend of Miloco. Speaks for itself really. Anyway we quite enjoyed last issue's feature, so have decided to do it again, of course with a different friend this time.

Over the last few years Milo Music has expanded considerably, not just in terms of studios and equipment, but also our web-activity. Our fantastically diverse website has our very good Dutch friends and web developers, Resource Studio, much to thank for. So, you've guessed it, the Friend of Miloco for this issue of MILC is...
