Engineer, there and everywhere! The heart and soul of Miloco is its staff. And all the most important bits - the ventricles, aorta, morality cortex and rhythm arteries - belong to our beloved engineers. Here, for your delectation and delight, is a glimpse of what they've been up to recently.
Pete Hofmann
With 15 years of top-flight experience under his belt, Pete continues to be the gentleman of choice for a host of quality projects. Of late he's been mixing a track from the new album for the Pet Shop Boys and mixed the recent single from Keisha White. He has been producing, recording and mixing for old friend Luke Haines, and recording mixtapes for Ms Dynamite. There's also been time for tracking strings with Snow Patrol, a host of remixes with longtime collaborator Richard X and ongoing projects with Lucas Secon. For a look at his full CV go here: click here.
Finn Eiles
Finnbar's star continues to rise. As well as preparing several recent Mystery Jets singles for take-off, he's also been at the desk for the soon-to-be-RIPing, Test Icicles. Engineering tracks for the Howling Bells with Simon Raymonde and he's also mixed some forthcoming b-sides for The Futureheads. Finally he is engineering for for The Dead 60's with none other than Salaam Remy. Finn is definitely one of the best up and coming guitar band engineers around. For his CV click this way.
Joe Hirst
Joe is also going from strength to strength, busy honing his recording and/or mixing skills with an evermore eclectic and cutting edge selection of artists. A regular favourite of Howie B, he's been engineering of late for Ego and will be off to Italy soon to work on another Italian act. He's also been assisting Ben Hillier with The Futureheads, James Ford with The Good Books, as well as Fightstar. Joe's also continued to record, produce and mix unsigned tune magnets Terra Alpha, and record/produce for the eternally broken hearted Lights. He's also engineered for Hicksville6 and The English Channel. For more on Joe, this is the way to go.
Martin Jenkins
Our greatest export is never far from the bright lights of Paris, most recently to help out regular client Thierry Amiel for SonyBMG. Closer to home, he's been recording and programming the sleek and wonderful noises of Damien Saez at Rockfield, as well as programming in our Neve Room with producer Teo Miller. He's spent time with Resolute at The Dairy and there have also been projects with Ben Onono, Velarsound and Zico Chain. To find out more, click this way.
Matt Foster
Matt's the latest addition to the Miloco roster and he's excelled in delivering up-to the-minute recording, programming, mixing and remixing skills to a great range of artists. Specialising in hip-hop, grime, r'n'b and everything in between, and for artists as underground/chart-friendly/diverse as Smifey, Gorillaz, MC Hard Kaur, Swiss, All 4 Corners, Alesha, Akira The Don and Ms Dynamite, he's the man every self respecting urban act is seeking out. For a look at his CV, slip over here.
Matt Hyde
More often than not seen loitering with head metal man Colin Richardson, this Matt is in constant demand from those in need of a little Grrrr in their guitars. Visits to New York to oversee the mastering of Fightstar's recently recorded debut album (which he engineered from start to finish), and Paris to track drums for Deekline & Wizard (see below), have nestled beside running the desk for established metallers Bullet For My Valentine, engineering for acoustic-wielding Foy Vance. For a look at Matt's CV, please select here.
Ben Thackeray
Over the last few months Ben has been working extensively with master rhythm shackler, Steve Dub, both at Miloco and further afield as well as gaining a reputation with many other bands. He has been busy on projects for Bloc Party and recording an album for Sunshine Underground. His effortless talent and calming ways have also seen him reunited with Charles Campbell-Jones, recording and mixing his debut album. He has also recently engineered for heavy rockers Winnebago Deal, and finally did an excellent job recording and mixing some tracks for this year must-see band Boy Kill Boy. For Mr Thackeray's CV, click here.
Greg 'Wizard' Fleming
Busy of late with collaborator Deekline recording their follow-up to Breaks, Beats and Blondes, Greg's recent clients have included X-Press 2, Verbalicious, Ms Dynamite and her recent mixtape activities, as well as Lady Sovereign. He's also been active on the globe-trotting DJ circuit, taking his deck-manipulating talents to dancefloors as far flung as Australia and Miami. Click on this for his CV: Wizard. Studio Round-upSo that was March. Once more we were proud to welcome artists from every conceivable genre to our studios. From the eight corners of the musical planet they came: rockers and balladeers, rappers and pop-types, metallers and disco kings, jazzy-sorts and the beat-ridden. We welcomed them all! And thank you all! Specifically... Miloco One - The Neve Room
The Neve's first customer was Irish export Brian Kennedy, in for a week with the production/engineer double act that is
Calum McColl and Phill Brown. Bella Union's Howling Bells then popped in for a day of Simon Raymonde
-led mixing, followed by tre-blinkin-mendous The Good Books under the guidance of James Ford. Next up, soon-to-be-massive
Charles Campbell-Jones was back with us, mixing his debut album with Miloco's Ben Thackeray, and we still found time
for visits from Howie B and Freelance Hellraiser, both taking advantage of our superlative Neve facilities (and
the dedicated ears of young Joe Hirst). Finally Hope Of The States snuck in for a day to round off the month.
Miloco Two - The Toyshop
The Toyshop was once again a battleground for boys who like their toys. As soon as one turned their back, another was in there!
When Plan B wasn't unleashing yet more inspired vitriol (with the help of Finn Eiles), Jamie T was busy with his
keys, guitars and mischief, with the help of programmer Ben Coupland. And when they weren't in, young Rich File slipped
out of his longterm-rental haven and put in some work on his forthcoming album with Ben Thackeray in attendance. There was
also room left for visits from Dave Tonge (with Joe Hirst), Charles C-J popped in between stints in The Neve and
Hoxton Square, and we even had someone in to film a little documentary (see what happens, dwarlings, when you host
Just The Two Of Us?)
Miloco Three - The Square
Speaking of which, The Square's month started with a fond farewell to the larynxes and lovies, as the BBC's Just
The Two Of Us thrilled for the very last time. Trying to follow in those Yeti-like shoes were those Howling Bells,
accompanied again by Simon Raymonde and young Finnbar. Next up, Belarus and Dave Eringa came to visit, as did
Toyshop-exile Plan B, and Ali Love - in with old mucker Steve Dub. Foy Vance was back with us again, with
Matt Hyde on the desk, while the increasingly abbreviated CCJ decided to grace yet another of our studios with his
melodious ways.
Miloco Four - The Garden
March saw The Garden start to bloom...First through the daisy-draped door were those lovely Duels, back with us again in the
company of James Ford and Jimmy Robertson. Debut-album-releasing Fightstar then popped back in, as always with the
trusty Matt Hyde at their side, to mix a live acoustic set. A raft of exiles from our other studios also stopped by to take
advantage of the top spec Garden monitoring, not least Plan B, Foy Vance, The Good Books and Howling Bells, as well as
Howie B and his Italian tunesmiths, Ego, with Joe Hirst running the protools. The dearly departing
Test Icicles were the next guys in, turning in their grave with the help of Miloco's Finn Eiles, before newbies
The Klaxons came to make some top sounds in the company of that man again, James Ford.
Miloco Five - The SSL
Fast achieving a stellar reputation, our new addition, The SSL Room, played host to a legion of quality acts this month.
Stuart Reid popped in to get us started, before Jody Lei came by for a week's mixing with the legendary Yoad Nevo
(who returned later in the month in the company of one Betty Curse). Miloco's SSL specialist Matt Foster then played
to host to the delectable Savannah Knight, back in for a day's mixing, and the mighty Diggaz who came to get stuck
in to some more rhythmed rhyming. Pluto were the next act to land before Stars & Clouds came to indulge
in a few days' mixing of lofty X. The magnificent MC Hard Kaur returned, again with our man Mr Matt Foster
on the desk, and last but far from least Nic Armstrong also swaggered by in the company of Chris Sheldon on the faders.
So, yet another wonderful month here at Miloco! Please be aware that the diary's filling up fast for the forthcoming weeks and months, so if you want to get tarred with the same glittering, sparkling and alluring brush as all these great artists, you better get on the blower to Sophie quick sharp to avoid disappointment. She's waiting for your call on 020 7232 0008, and you can also drop her a line via sophie@miloco.co.uk. |

Engineer, there and everywhere!
New assistant: Dave Johnstone
No, really, we really do have ANOTHER new member of staff. The air's getting perilously thin on the ground round here with all these talented lungs to cater for, but still we continue...because it's all for you! Anyway, to business. Our latest addition is young Dave Johnstone. He's an old friend of the studio and it's a pleasure to welcome him back into the gang. A few of his own words re: his pre-Miloco wilderness years: 'My passion for Music Technology started over ten years ago fiddling around on an Atari ST. Over the years this developed more and more, prompting me to work in many recording studios and study the subject at degree level as well as develop two websites: HomeMusicRecording.com Home-Recording-Studio.com Dave's now brought his exceptional enthusiasm and skills to us, where he's already been proving his worth to the likes of The Datsuns, Savannah Knight, Husky and Jody Lei. Welcome along to the party, Dave!
New equipment - Littlelabs Redeye DI Boxes
Ah, you've gotta love those bods down at Little Labs. And their Redeye DI boxes in particular. The came recommended from many of our leading clients including Dave Eringa for one. So we've gone and invested in two of the blighters, one for The Garden studios and one for The Square, and they're just bursting with fantastic features. Their vintage guitar effect interfaces, expandable re-amplifiers and vintage transformer passive DIs nestle behind all-too-pressable buttons delighting in names like 'phase invert' and 'earth lift'. Assuredly marvellous.
Camden Crawl Raffle!
The legendary Camden Crawl is almost upon us once more. And to celebrate this fantastic orgy of booze-sodden sonic mischief, Miloco are running another one of our great competitions. On the night of 20th April, enticing Miloco staff members will be stalking the streets of Camden and distributing our fantastic brochures to those lucky enough to walk past. And, not unlike the plot mechanism in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, there will be tickets inside. Not golden ones, admittedly, but raffle ones instead. (And 'raffle' coincidentally means 'golden' is both Swahili and Latin and, even more spookily, is almost a direct translation of 'fantastic range of London-based studios' in Patagonian Welsh!) Anyway, those raffle tickets will all have a number, we'll then have a prize draw, announce the results on our website, and the lucky winner will win a day in our The Square. Brilliant.
Never Cow-tow!
Oh, you lucky, lucky buggers. Lord knows what you've all done to deserve it but there's now a new issue of MILC to be read! The latest issue is jam-packed with all your favourite features, including interviews, artist profiles, industry news and muchas, muchas more. So, if you want to read an interview with Mike Spencer, producer for the likes of Jamiroquai, Badmarsh & Shri, Queen, Oi Va Voi, (oh, yes, and someone called Kylie) AND get the lowdown on Miloco's finest engineer/producer/(re)mixer Pete Hofmann AND Push The Button to help another worthy cause AND read all about Outlandish and Kody and MC Hard Kaur and Scully and Test Icicles PLUS all our recent releases, then drop your linen and grab your women and click on this: MILC
Latest Releases
Released 28th March 2006 The Kooks: 'Naive' Top 10 single, Naive, is the latest offering from Brighton's sweet-toned The Kooks. Up until now delivering "a brand of rambunctious garage rock with cheeky Brit attitude, Naive also reveals them to be a band who can deliver a killer pop groove." Regrettably we didn't get our hands on the lead track but all the remaining ones, Love That Girl, Hiding Low and Tea & Biscuits, were brand new songs all blitzed in 17 manic hours, down at The Square. Released 10th April Duels: 'Animal' The latest release from this "very good band. Packed full of tunes, a blase-cool disposition and some clever sonic tomfoolery, there are very few bands who are peddling such thrustingly excellent wares," so say Drowned in Sound. The Duels were with us throughout the New Year down in The Garden.
Released 17th April 2006 Plan B: 'Missin Link' Temporarily released in March on a limited run, the latest offering from everyone's favourite rapping acoustic guitar-wielding grime and hip-hop exponent shows once more that distinctive, original, unpigeonholeable music is a modern day possibility. Hoo-bloomin-ray. Plan B has spent vast swathes of the last few months with us, getting busy in The Toyshop, The Garden, The Square and The Neve Room. Keep your eyes peeled over the next few months for gargantuan releases from Futureheads, Zero 7, The Boyfriends, Hope Of The States and many, many more.
