Featuring an interview with none other than Steve 'Dub' Jones, masterful beat-shackler for the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Madness, Mint Royale, Audio Bullys and Clor, there's also a peek into the shadowy underworld of the Roadrunner Records 25th Anniversary project. Add to that: a staff profile of Greg 'Wizard' Fleming that includes kettles, grime and Australia; the latest from Miloco Client Watch, with its devilishly invasive reports on a host of recent artists' activities and meanderings; the latest Push The Button: your opportunity to leave the world a little bit better than how you found it; and, finally, needless to say, a whole lot more. Just follow this link and affix yourself to the udder of knowledge, enrichment and entertainment that is your friendly neighbourhood Milc. Studio Round-upWhat a November. We've been chockablock with a quality streetful of clients this month. With everything from dark chocolate-coated metal kids to nougatty hip-hop sorts, caramel-smooth electronica to soft-centered indie gubbins, we've been positively queasy with the eclectic wonderfulness of it all. Miloco One (The Neve Room)
The Neve Room was rocking to the rumbustious rumpus of Fightstar this month, as they continued to mix their debut album. Colin Richardson
was at the helm and, nestling alongside, young Matt Hyde was the man they call 'the engineer'. (You can download
Matt's CV here). Also in The Neve, Zero 7 were mixing the forthcoming follow-up
to such mega-hits as Another Late Night, When It Falls and Simple Things. The legendary Phill Brown (Rolling Stones, Talk Talk, Roxy Music,
Beth Gibbons) was in charge of the mix, with Ferg Peterkin assisting.
Miloco Two (The Toyshop)
Getting their hands on the toys earlier than St Nick would approve were The Test-Icicles. They were in The Toyshop with Miloco's
Finn Eiles engineering and Ed Kane assisting. Fightstar were in there too for a week, smelting a little more mega-metal, and there was still
room for the marauding men they call Whitey to come make guitar-drenched mischief. They were in tracking with producer Robert Harder, with
Miloco's Ben Thackeray and Finn Eiles in engineering mode. To download the gents CVs click here:
Finn, and here: Ben.Miloco Three (The Square)
Meanwhile, Hoxton was playing host to head Manic, James Dean Bradfield, tracking material for a forthcoming solo album with the help of the
masterful Guy Massey (The Manics, Groove Armada, Let It Be...Naked, Idlewild). Mike Grimley assisted on that one. Swiss band Water Lily were
also in, mixing a whole pile of album tracks with Teo Miller running the desk and Miloco's Martin Jenkins engineering. Finally, the
garage/hip hop/grime Blighty boys, Plan B, were also down The Square working on a single with none other than Paul Epworth. Ben Thackeray was
there to lend a hand. Take a peek at Mr Jenkins' CV here: Martin Miloco Four (The Garden)
The Garden was home for Sony BMG's The Rifles this month. They were in tracking a single with Ian Broudie in charge, Ali Staton engineering and
our indie-meister Finn Eiles in attendance. Young Kathryn Williams also returned to us for a week. Darius Kedros was producing and Joe Hirst
(click here for his CV) and Ben Thackeray took turns in doing the assisting/engineering thing. The Test-Icicles also wandered in from The Toyshop
for a day's mixing, and last but not least there was also time for Italian act Ego to squeeze in for a good few days. They were in with the one
and only Howie B producing, while Joe Hirst engineered.
And that, dear, dear friends, is your lot. 2005's been a hoot for us and we hope for you guys too. Thank you to You! Our clients.
Here's Sophie!
Christmas has come early to the weary battled-hardened souls at Miloco, for a few short days ago a package arrived. It was a large package, person-sized, gift-wrapped and addressed to us all. We fell upon it. As one, we tore at the ribbons and paper...sticky tape tumbled erratically to the floor...slowly more and more of the unknown gift was revealed...excitement crackled in the air.. and then, with a gasp, we saw her...it was Sophie! Sent from afar by benign benefactors, she's our latest delightful recruit and she's here to manage all your bookings needs! Boasting years of industry experience, an unflappable exterior and a personality to embarrass a sparkler in a glitter ball factory, she's destined to become an essential addition to our team. So please join us in welcoming Sophie to the fold, indeed why not contact her today? And while you're saying your hellos, best take the chance to book yourself some studio time...it's going like hot cakes, you know. You can contact Sophie on 020 7232 0008 or via sophie@miloco.co.uk
Toyshop tune-up
Here at Miloco we're not the kind of folk to rest on our laurels. With that in mind, we set about our beloved Toyshop and upgraded her from Mixplus to Protools HD, now all of our studios can boast protools HD running on the latest Apple G5's. The rig boasts a strong array of plug-ins, a 192 interface with 16 outputs and finally after 4 years and £100,000 of investment we have four protools HD rigs - thank you digidesign for your expensive upgrades !
The Garden of earthly delights
Elsewhere, down in the heavenly tracking environment that is The Garden, we've also been busy with the improvements. The 25th of December was still far away, but we couldn't help but treat our indie-favoured studio to a splendiferous GML 8200 EQ. Once again we keep on investing for our clients. Lets hope it doesn't go wrong as Massenburg charge more for the parts than the unit. Early next year will see a whole rebuild of the control room. Watch this space !
Walkman in a website wonderland
Miloco engineer Martin Jenkins is also one half of superior sonic act Stratus. They've just launched a new website that you can peer at right here: www.stratus.mu In related news, the new Sony Walkman ad campaign - featuring the debut Stratus tune, Uplink ("astonishing - an outer-spacial electronic symphony') - has just swaggered, perhaps a little tardily, into the ring dominated by the mighty ipod empire. It took its bow in a recent Hollyoaks ad break, and is no doubt destined for every mid-programme breather in the months ahead, so we'd recommend you get on that Stratus bandwagon quick!
Latest Releases from Miloco
Plan B - No Good - The single is accompanied by a supreme stop-motion video that includes, rather superbly and curiously, hair being invisibly trimmed followed by said trimmed hair running away across a sofa. Brilliant, obviously. Mystery Jets - Alas Agnes - A slice of guitar-doused tuneful loveliness. A favourite of BBC's 6Music and destined to come pretty high up most people's end of year alphabetical charts. For a look at all the other Miloco releases this year, please take a trip to our delectably dancing festive homepage: www.miloco.co.uk |
