Newsletter December 2006

A special festive note from Miloco: 2006 has been a big year for us. We've been busier than a billion bees and through more changes than Mr Benn in a revolving door with a transmogrifier. Therefore, this newsletter's a bit of a bumper issue. There's just so much to tell you, you see...

That was the year that was...

And why did all those superlative clients visit us? Because (even though we started the year with a supreme selection of magnificent studios) we've added so much to the Miloco group throughout 2006 that we're now white hot, platinum-coated and turbo-charged. Imagine us with our pants over our trousers - we're that super.

So what have we done?

Three new studios! Miloco 5, 7 and 8 were all added to the group enabling us to deliver yet more virtuoso variety to our customers. The SSL Room, Musikbox and The Pool are wonderfully distinct, one-off environments that deliver superb results for a vast range of projects. They've all proved extraordinarily popular with our established clients and new customers alike. Check them out.

Upgrades and overhauls! We were also busy elsewhere else, tweaking and honing to deliver even better service. The Garden received a pair of delicious Boxer T4 monitors courtesy of Whitfield Street (RIP) making it a superb place to track AND mix, The SSL Room got a new Pro Tools rig and supercool air con systems were installed in The Square and The Garden. Meanwhile, Waves Platinum plug-ins, huge Apple monitors, Sky TV, revamped deluxe valve mics and countless other great things all got added in abundance across the Miloco suite of studios.

Out & about! Miloco was also out in force at various shindigs and conferences throughout the year. We went down to Brighton for the inaugural Great Escape; up to Manchester for the legendary In The City; popped over to Real World for their anniversary bash; saw Radiohead (oh, bliss...) and Jamie T and Regina Spektor at V; The Spinto Band and Arctic Monkeys and Lady Sovereign at Reading; and even hung around in London long enough to catch the TDK Cross Central Festival. In addition to all these we hosted another ace 5-a-side competition, gave away studio time with our World Cup Spot The Ball game and welcomed cartloads of other competition winners through our doors.

And we can assure you that 2007 is promising to be just as revolutionary and just as exciting, so watch this space and come with us on the ride...

Bargain Bauble Beats

With rates so cheap they're making Rudolph's cheeks blush redder than his nose, you really should take advantage of Miloco's exquisite range of studios this Xmas and New Year.

There are still a handful of slots left and, needless to say, a wah-drenched guitar solo over a fat beat drizzled with analogue keyboard riffs is far, far more entertaining than a sprout-filled grumpy uncle, Mary Poppins and the sight of your younger brother's far nicer presents...

Studio Round-up

Bye bye, November. And thanks for coming. As you're all about to find out, it was a corker of a month and a more than fitting penultimate line up for what's been an extraordinary year. We welcomed back old friends and met a heap of new ones, all the while playing host to sessions that are destined to be the stuff that 2007's charts, dance floors and awards ceremonies are gonna be Christmas pud-full of...

Miloco One - The Neve Room

We kicked off the month in our premier mix facility by waving a temporary and fond farewell to Chemical Brothers as they took a break from mixing their forthcoming album with Steve Dub. Mr Dub then hung around to take charge of the mix of young Ali Love's debut long player, alongside our prized engineer Joe Hirst. The Sessions popped by too for a bit of tracking and mixing with Paul Tipler on the desk, followed by old buddies Engineers (with Ben Thackeray) and Patrick Wolf (with Finn Eiles). The delightful Alberta Cross was in next in the company of Simon Barny Barnicott, and then we welcomed in the marvellously monikered Black Strobe to mix a mountain of album tracks with Paul Epworth and engineer Al O'Connell.

Head here for CVs: Ben Thackeray, Joe Hirst & Finn Eiles

Miloco Two - The Toyshop

Up in The Toyshop, young Ali Love was in residence between his sessions in The Neve. But when he wasn't around we also had room for the likes of The Real Heat with Howie B (and Joe Hirst engineering), not to mention a flying visit from previous long term Toyshop resident, the truly tremendous Jamie T. DAVE the Drummer then came to see us again for a week before hip hop head Bashy popped by for a session with our own Matt Foster. Mpho Skeef then came by to do some album track overdubs, before Black Strobe did a day of pre-production ahead of their Neve mix session and Sadie Ama worked on a single in the company of Sie Medway-Smith for a few lovely days. Ali Love then slipped back in to bookend the month and all was done.

Another CV: Matt Foster

Miloco Three - The Square

Hoxton Square saw the month in with Dead 60s and Madness in the company of producer Carl Carlton, before celebrating Bonfire Night with a Merz remix with Ben Thackeray. Masters of atmospheric jazz and beats, Taxi, then took advantage of Pete Hofmann's exceptional talents to record some delicate vocals before ace newbies Awful Sparks took a day of Finn Eiles' time to knock out a forthcoming single. Drew McFadden then tracked some demo material for Ruthie Phoenix before Engineers and Vita Ross with Tom Wilcox popped by, again both with our Ben T in attendance, before Larrikin Love came along in the company of Adam Pope, with our man Finnbar engineering. Junior Boys and Grace then both had a day each mixing before Starling took time out from interviewing cannibals to track for their album with Darren Allison.

Uno mas CV: Pete Hofmann

Miloco Four - The Garden

Down in The Garden we celebrated the onset of winter just like David Attenborough does, in the company of Arctic Monkeys. Work continued apace on their second album under the watchful ears of producers Mike Crossey and James Ford. The boys were in there for the whole month, bar the last few days when the animal theme continued with Dogs. They began their own lengthy album session, this time with producer Steve Musters.

Miloco Five - The SSL

Up in our Islington SSL Room we welcomed back the brilliant Charles Campbell-Jones, in tracking and mixing a new single with Senor Ben Thackeray. Next up we had Danielle Delaunay in with producer Imran Hanif and co-pilot Matt Foster. But for the majority of the month it was all about Cameron Meshell, who followed on from his recent tracking sessions in The Pool with 3 weeks of mixing with Dave McCracken. Oh, but we did also have time to squeeze a couple of mini sessions in for Will Davies (with Tim Roe) and John Mackenzie. And that was that for our Highbury November.

Miloco Seven & Eight - Musikbox & The Pool

Let's start in the utterly gargantuan and unique recording environment that is The Pool. Shitdisco kicked off the month, tracking album tracks for Fierce Panda with Luke Smith and our man Ferg Peterkin. We then had a couple of days in the company of the supreme Adem, with new Miloco man Mark Rankin engineering, and a day with The Early Years. Then the decks were cleared for a 2 week session with NME darlings The Horrors, marshaled by Ben Hillier and with young Ferg Peterkin on engineering duty. Meanwhile, over in our analogue synth haven, Musikbox, we welcomed back everyone's favourite acoustic-wielding MC, Plan B. He was working on oceans of material in Kentish Town with Miloco mate Jimmy Robertson engineering. And back over in The Pool, Polar Bear had now swung by for a week on the jazz side of the tracks led by Seb Rochford, again with newly recruited retro expert Mark Rankin engineering.

A Final CV: Mark Rankin

And that, ladles and jellyspoons, was that. Quite a list of tiptop stars of the recent past, present and imminent future, I'm sure you all agree. To follow in their yeti-like footsteps and experience for yourself the wondrous vibe and service that only Miloco can deliver, you know what to do...

Call Sophie today on 020 7232 0008, or drop her a line via sophie@miloco.co.uk. It makes so much sense it's a wonder the government haven't taxed it.

File's new room...

We've been busy with the builders down at Leroy Street. One of our much-loved long term residents, Rich File (UNKLE, Forme, Sexy Beast & Guantanamero soundtracks, etc, etc), is now the proud new resident in an ace day-lit programming room. We felt too guilty having him stuck up the spiral staircase in his kooky cavern of sonic mischief, and so converted a section of our reception area for him.

It's now a lovely large day-lit room big enough to accommodate his ever-expanding collection of vintage keyboards and other whacky whatnots. It also includes a small overdubbing booth and extra special bespoke Miloco-built amp box, allowing him to crank up the volume to mole-torturing levels (without distressing those good folk at the local council).

Meanwhile, Rich's ex-home has now been converted into an en suite lounge for customers of The Pool, and has been decked out with sofas and Sky TV and all else a weary musician could desire.

Artboo

The recent In The City event in Manchester was great, all of it. But two things stood out head and shoulders above all other things: 1) Gideon Conn - soon to be intergalactically massive blues/funk/folk/indie uberlord and 2) Artboo - a rather marvellous Manc-based arts and music web portal. We've bothered you about Gideon before, so here's the skinny on Artboo, in their own words...

Founders Mark Fraser and Barrie Taube have created a new and unique website that offers bands and solo artists a chance to showcase their music online to more people than ever before. By offering members the option to sell their music, ArtBoo were the first to have radically altered the dynamics of the online music buying process by offering buyers so much more choice.

ArtBoo is not led by fashion or trends, and our aim is to allow members the opportunity to market and sell their music to the general public.

New media entrepreneur Mark Fraser, CEO of sellstudent books.com and zero5media Ltd adds: "Our passion is for great music and with the dawn of the bedroom musician or band there is UK talent just waiting to explode. With the help of ArtBoo, members have a window of opportunity where consumers and A & R's can find a diverse mix of genres that meet their requirements, with a few already having secured publishing deals and sales."

So there you have it. They've been going for less than a year but the future's looking shiny and bright. Go check them out, why don'tcha?

Pope takes up residence in Hoxton!

Oh yes, from now on papal decrees will be fluttering through the air over Hoxton Square like ticker tape in a typhoon. Because Daniel Lindegren, the Vatican DC main man, is moving into our recently vacated programming room in Hoxton Market.

Red Flag Records' finest is also a producer of increasing note (for the likes of The Vitamins) and all at Miloco are utterly cocker hoop to be welcoming Daniel into the family.
