The Greatest Hits of 07...
Man alive, twenty oh-seven has been a screamer. Scientists celebrated the international year of helio-physics, the Chinese celebrated the year of the pig, the lunar calendar celebrated the year of the boar, someone else celebrated the year of the dolphin, the scouts celebrated their 100th birthday, and all the other things someone with a freakishly in-depth journal of the past 12 months has cared to share with us on Wikipedia. Of course Miloco celebrated all those things, rapturously, but within our own walls this year has been a non-stop barrage of applause for many of our beloved troop of clients. We've had four number one albums: Kate Nash's Made of Bricks (recorded in The Pool and Engine Room by Paul Epworth and Interface's Mark Rankin), The Chemical Brothers' We Are The Night (mixed in The Engine Room by Steve Dub), Newton Faulkner's Hand Built By Robots (produced by Mike Spencer at Miloco), and Arctic Monkeys' Favourite Worst Nightmare (recorded in The Garden by James Ford and Mike Crossey). We also had four nominations for the Mercury Music Prize: Klaxons' Myths Of The Near Future (recorded at The Garden by James Ford and Jimmy Robertson), Fionn Regans' End Of History (mixed in The Engine Room by Interface's Finn Eiles), Jamie T's Panic Prevention (recorded in The Toyshop), and Arctic Monkeys' Favourite Worst Nightmare. Moving swiftly on, check out these facts and figures: Jamie T and Klaxons scooped NME awards, Arctic Monkeys and Oasis reigned at the Brits, Machine Head and Gallows brushed them aside at the Kerrang Awards, and Kate Nash and Arctic Monkeys nabbed a couple of Q's. But let us not forget the 300 or so other clients who have come to us this year, who have all been nothing but a pleasure to work with. You are all hugely valued members of the Miloco family, and we wouldn't be able to do it without you. We are forever grateful. And that, as they say, was that. We hope you have all enjoyed the year as much as us, and we very much look forward to another 12 months of merry musical success. See you in 08!

Studio HighlightsThey always say, "remember November", but were we ever really going to forget it with the following bunch of awesome artists ? Here's a few of the highlights from across our studios last month... Miloco One - The Engine Room
The first few days of November saw The Lea Shores wrap up weeks of hard work on their
debut album with producer Ben Hillier and Interface engineer Ferg Peterkin. We
bade misty-eyed farewells. Starting a fresh tank of fuel were the promising new rock band
The Skies, who were in for a few days with Interface's Matt Hyde producing
and engineering, and then the rest of the month saw the talk-of-the-town Foals mixing
with producer Mike Crossey.
Miloco Two - The Toyshop
Charles Campbell-Jones and Interface engineer Ben Thackeray rode up to Miloco 2
armed with guitars and faders last month. They booked out a few days over the course of
November. Producers Steve Dub and Segs worked with a few folks upstairs too,
firstly with reggae/rap artist Aynzli Jones, then with Haypenny, and then again
with Vanessa Brown. As eclectic as ever in The Toyshop!
Miloco Three - The Square
Clearly masters of performing arts, We Are Performance made their debut in Miloco colours
last month. They spent three days in Hoxton. It was good to have Nick Harrison back,
working once again with producer Paul Epworth and Interface's Mark Rankin. Paul
and Mark stuck around for a while, booking out the last two weeks of the month to track material
with the ever-so exciting Primary 1.
Miloco Four - The Garden
Most of The Garden's month was taken up by The Rushes who were tracking their debut album
with producer par excellence, Victor Van Vugt. Stay posted for more news on our website on
the forthcoming release by The Rushes. Leeds rockers The Glitterati squeezed in a
few days towards the end of the month with Interface's master rock technician Matt Hyde
engineering and producing.
Miloco Five - The Yard
The Yard had a spectacular start to the month when Coldplay paraded up to the gates and
checked in for a week with engineer Marcus Dravs. They were followed by a band called
Big Face, who were working with engineer Jason Boshoff. Tying the knot in November
were firstly John and Jehn and then The Teenagers who were in the fine company of
engineer Alex Dromgoole.
Miloco Seven - Musikbox
Suggs of Madness fame, alongside Tom Dinsdale of Audio Bullys fame, continued their
work in Kentish Town at the start of the month. Then came the great pleasure of having
UB40 grafting away up in our Musikbox mix room. The Campbells and co worked alongside
engineer Dan Sprigg for a good two weeks. At the end of the month, The Long Blondes
were back at Miloco, following on from their month-long tracking stint in The Garden. Producer
Erol Alkan and engineer Jimmy Robertson joined them.
Miloco Eight - The Pool
Franz Ferdinand kicked things off in our extreme live tracking room. It was good to see
them again for a few days, as always. Not long after they checked out, rising Liverpudlian
rockers The Rascals were laying down tracks for their debut album with producer Ben
Hillier and Interface engineer Ferg Peterkin. They polished off most of what
remained, although those Lea Shores managed to pop their heads round the door to say
howdy at the very end of November.
Miloco Nine - Sofa Sound
The studio compass finally leads us West to Chiswick, where our fantastic new SSL room was
glowing in the presence of yet more fine music folk. Does It Offend You, Yeah's
October session with producer Eliot James rolled over into the start of November, and
they were closely followed by White Lies and producer Max Dingle. It was a pleasure
having new artist Polly Scattergood come to our Chiswick studio. She worked over a few days
with Miloco's James Aparicio in charge of engineering duties.
We also had the great Portishead return after their session in October, they were once
again with engineer Craig Silvie, and then avant-garde indie band Guillemots came
to scour Miloco 9 for sonic treats. We trust they found them...
...and that was that. One minute November, next minute no-more. We now awake each morning, tear back those tiny cardboard flaps and indulge in a little dairy advent treat to kickstart the latter days of a very hectic year. Many of you will sadly not hear from us again until next year, but fear not, that is not nearly as long as it sounds!! So to sign off the final Miloco news bulletin of 2007, we would just like to wish every single one of you a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Fare ye well!!! The Greatest Hits of 07...
Studio Profile - Sofa Sound
Time to beam the spotlight on one of our marvellous studios. This month we're going to dip into the wonders of Miloco 9: Sofa Sound. In the four months since we took the reins of Hugh Padgham's exquisite SSL room in Chiswick, the queues leading up to the doors have been fast growing, and it is easy to understand why... Sofa Sound is pure luxury. The immaculately-kept day-lit control room is based around an SSL G+ Series console with 6 mono channels and 4 stereo, a 48 output Protools HD3 system with apogee convertors and a vast array of plug-ins, Quested monitors, a large selection of outboard, an extensive microphone collection, plus a well-sized live room allowing you to comfortably track bands. Add to this the leisurely recreation room, a fantastic roof terrace providing great views across the city, and all the amenities and transport links of the lively and colourful Chiswick High Road, and you have everything you could possibly need on a session. So far we've had all sorts booking up time in this top-end studio, including Portishead, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, I Was A Cub Scout and Guillemots, as well as top producers such as Mark Ronson, Gareth Jones, Erol Alkan, Simon 'Barny' Barnicott, Mike Crossey, and Craig Silvie. We're raking in more great names faster than a leaf bandit in Autumn, so make sure you don't miss the party in '08 (it's only going to get better!!). Call Vicki on 0207-232-0008 or email vicki@miloco.co.uk.
Empirical Labs Distressors at The Garden
Just to let you know, we've added some excellent new Empirical Labs Distressors to The Garden. Due to popular demand, these hugely enjoyable compressors have been linked for stereo compression, and are just the latest addition to a whole load of work we've done to The Garden (but you of course know about that having read our last two newsletters in meticulous detail!).
Look who's back!!!
No, it's not one of our past runners-turned-neighbourhood milkman. It is however, our beloved webzine, Milc, which we are pleased to announce has returned, new and improved! Having re-thought and redesigned the Milc format, we are freshly launching it as a regularly updated portal of fascinating news, reviews, interviews and features regarding all things within the Miloco community. There's a whole host of ideas in the pipeline too, so stay posted for more on that. For now, pop by and have a snoop at the new-look MILC.
Latest Releases
Released 26th November 2007 Gallows - 'Orchestra of Wolves'
Tattooed on stage, cracked-open heads, untamable mosh-pits, and that's just Gallows' year on the live circuit!! From their time in the studio the Watford punks' masterpiece, Orchestra Of Wolves, has been given three different spins in 2007, this obviously being the third. Brace yourself for more previously unreleased tunes of fierce and barbaric hardcore mastery, of course joined by the tracks that throughout the year have propelled Frank and the boys into global punk heroes. Gallows were in The Yard and The Garden on several occasions throughout the year with Interface engineer Matt Hyde, who engineered and mixed a selection of tracks off Orchestra of Wolves. www.gallows.co.uk Released 26th November 2007 Spider and the Flies - 'Metallurge'
Spider Webb and Tomethy Furse are often spotted plying their trades as two of The Horrors, however for now they have stepped away from the day jobs to become Spider and the Flies. Their first single, Metallurge, concocts a sonic stew of beats, bleeps, creaks, the odd chiming bell, perhaps a few bleeting sheep if you listen carefully enough etc. etc. Great tune by the way. Spider and the Flies were in The Toyshop in May 2007, where Metallurge was created. It was produced and engineered by Interface's Ferg Peterkin. www.myspace.com/ spiderandtheflies To check out more of the Miloco releases of 2007, please look this way: www.miloco.co.uk/news/ newreleases |
