2009... and that was the year that was!

It's been another jam packed 12 months at Miloco, with big albums, bigger refurbs and of course some very exciting new studio launches occuring right the way through from January to December. So to wrap up our final newsletter of the year, we thought we'd have a quick recap of 2009's best highlights...

This year we have seen eleven Miloco-made albums reach the top ten of the UK album charts, including two number 1's: Editors' In This Light And On This Evening, produced by Flood in Assault & Battery 2, and Calvin Harris' Ready for the Weekend, which Calvin produced in his private room at Miloco. The other nine were N-Dubz's Against All Odds, Chipmunk's I Am Chipmunk, Newton Faulkner's Rebuilt By Humans, Ian Brown's My Way, Jamie T's Kings and Queens, Florence and the Machine's Lungs, Madness' The Liberty of Norton Folgate, The Enemy's Music for the People and Faryl Smith's Faryl.

In the summer we put our main Leroy Street complex under hammer and tong for our biggest refurbishment in years. Our flagship mix room, The Engine Room, was cosmetically upgraded with a fresh makeover, and we have also enhanced the spec, re-affirming it as one of London's very best mix environments. The Engine Room's former live room was rebuilt and renamed The Bridge - now a multifunctional facility comprising three separate spaces, and which can be used as an affordable, standalone recording/editing studio, or still as a live room in conjunction with The Engine Room. The third refurb job at Leroy Street was of course The Pool, our vast live tracking room we run in partnership with producer Ben Hillier. We built a brand new control room and drum booth, and completely overhauled the space both cosmetically and acoustically to create the very best reinvented tracking studio in London. What is extra special about The Pool's new design is that you can now enjoy this huge and great-sounding recording space behind the closed doors of a separate control room, or the studio can be run with the control room equipment setup in the live space and two additional booths perfect for extreme live recording ! The Pool is now the most versatile tracking space in London... Many of you will of course still be piecing together your memories of our Leroy Street relaunch party, which we held in September!!

Once we'd cut the ribbons in SE1, we moved up to Shoreditch to start work on our legendary band tracking room, The Garden. Producer Craig Silvey joined a long-standing partnership between Miloco and Matt Johnson, and moved in with his phenomenal collection of vintage analogue gear, centred around his highly-rare vintage Neve 8026 console and stacks of outboard and microphones, which now line up alongside the studio's excellent choice of backline. We relaunched The Garden as London's ulitmate vintage band tracking room in November.

Of course it would be very surprising and even a little sad if a year passed at Miloco without us opening a few brand new studios to the world. But fear not, as 2009 has claimed four new studios for the Miloco group!! At the start of the year we opened Black Rock in partnership with Kostas Kalimeris. Black Rock is our second luxury residential retreat, located on the beautiful Greek island of Santorini and which provides clients with an incredible 5-star recording experience. In Spring we joined forces with producer Mike Crossey to launch the next era at the famous Liverpool studio The Motor Museum. Since unveiling The Motor Museum, we have welcomed the likes of Blood Red Shoes, The View, Mark Ronson and The Suzukis to the studio.

By the start of the summer we had moved East to Castleford, near Leeds, to open The Chairworks alongside Ryan Jarvis, our second Northern studio. The Chairworks is a great residential complex which is perfect for bands and artists based in the North of England. It is an SSL studio with a fantastic selection of recording spaces and a vibey "band house" which sleeps upto eight people. Our final studio launch of the year was back in London, where we teamed up once more with producers Alan Moulder and Flood to represent their amazing SSL mix room, Assault & Battery 1, based at the Battery complex in Willesden Green. Another incredibly spec'd facility, Assault & Battery 1 is where Alan does the majority of all his mix projects, and where he has recently mixed albums by bands such as Bloc Party, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, The Big Pink and Wolfmother...

... and so that was the year that was, in a nutshell. It's been another rollercoaster for sure, but has been worth every minute of the ride. We thank all our clients who have joined us throughout the year - its been a pleasure as always! We're looking forward to seeing you all again in 2010, when you can also be guaranteed plenty more exciting studio developments from Miloco...

New Pool Session Photos

The snappers have been back again, this time to capture some live shots of the Beth Jeans Houghton sessions which have been going on in The Bridge and The Pool. We have some great session photos of Beth and the guys working in The Pool, which perfectly captures the new vibe at the studio. The band and producer Ben Hillier opted to relocate the control room back into the live space, to recreate the room's original 'extreme live recording' environment.

SSL Showcases at Battery and Chairworks

It was good to see some familiar faces down at the SSL Showcase Evening held at the Battery complex last month, and the one we held at Chairworks previous to that. Our friends at SSL put on two great evenings, including some interesting keynote speeches from the company, ourselves and the great Flood and Alan Moulder. We opened up the studios in the building, and a few cans of lager in the fridge, and generally mused over the technical feats of modern-day recording studios!

A special thanks to Jim at SSL for putting on the evenings. You can catch up on more info by visiting the Solid State Logic blog: solidstatelogic.wordpress.com/.

New Gear in The Motor Museum and Engine Room...

New Gear newsflash! There's several new toys on the spec at The Motor Musuem. We have 2 new vintage RCA 44DX ribbon microphones and a beautiful vintage RCA 77DX (pictured). We have also added a supreme 1972 Fender Telecaster Custom.

Meanwhile back in London, due to high demand we have enhanced The Engine Room's spec with a Summit Audio DCL200 Stereo Compressor.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

So there's just two weeks to go until we're keeled over Christmas cracker jokes, clothed in our favourite knitted woolies, whilst dosing ourselves with mulled wine. Have a very Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year. Here's to the year of 2009, the decade known as the noughties, and of course all the excitement that 2010 will bring. See you next year!
