Programming room to rent in Hoxton !

Listen up folks! We have one of our terrific programming rooms available to rent from March 1. Situated close to the original Miloco studio, The Square, and in the heart of trendy pocket Hoxton, the room is on offer for long term rent.

Previous tenant pka Palmskin is reluctantly moving on after 9 years of breakthrough electronic music production in Hoxton. "It breaks my heart, because it has been such a great place for me to work over the last nearly 9 years. It has been a real sanctuary and seen me through some difficult times, both in terms of music and inspiration and my emotional and personal life." We would all like to take this opportunity to wish Simon well wherever he continues to work in the future.

Measuring 3m x 5.5m, sound-proofed, with 24 hour security and access, and a shared office/booth/rec room, this programming room serves as the perfect base for the creative musician, engineer or producer. And if that weren't enough, you will be a stone's throw away from the hip and happening bars and restaurants of Hoxton and right above the fantastic Real Greek, so it won't be all work and no play!!

Richard X, Swing Out Sister and Spiritualised occupy some of the other rooms in the building.

To arrange a visit, or make further enquiries, please contact Nick or Sophie on 020-7232-0008 or email nick@miloco.co.uk.

You Tube presents... 'The Battle of Miloco'

Well, he certainly made an impression on his brief stint in the Big Brother house, and now Miloco's favourite punk rocker, Donny Tourette, and his band of merry men, Towers of London, is at the centre of another broadcasted controversy. Rumours of what did actually happen in the semi-final clash between the Towers and fellow Miloco clients, Roll Deep, have been circulating ever since our 5-a-side tournament in August. And now thanks to those wonderful folks over at You Tube, we have video evidence of the brawl.

Let's face it, any game of footy between a gang of grime artists and punks is going to be entertainment in itself, but that was just the warm-up act. When the final whistle blew with the score at 3-1 to the Towers, there were certainly a few bones needing to be picked, but thankfully not broken! Having said that, judging by some of the atrocious tackling caught on camera, not one single A&E omission seems miraculous!

Although needless to say we anticipate another cracking competition in 2007. It appears we have enough colourful characters kicking about our various studios who would be up for it!

You can check out the various exchanges of words, fists and even spit right here.

Studio Round-up

For a month where couples are most likely to split up, and everyone is probably feeling overwhelmingly broke, cold and generally petulant, January was rocking for all at Miloco. Our great empire of recording studios was fully active from the very start of the month right through to the finish, and we were treated to a healthy mix of music and artists. So here is the round-up of all those interesting folks who walked in and (some reluctantly) out of the various Miloco doors in January.

Miloco One - The Neve Room

It's supposedly the most depressing month of the year, yet January 07 was not at all bad for our exquisite Neve Room. Firstly we had Edinburgh troubadour, Lucky Jim, tracking his forthcoming single with our own Finn Eiles, followed two days later by the return of the fabulous Parisian electro duo, Black Strobe, back to re-work four album tracks with Paul Epworth twisting the knobs and Darren Simpson assisting. With the studio seats satisfyingly warmed, the self-confessed 'Superstar DJ's' were back. The Chemical Brothers were in for two weeks with Tom, Ed and Steve Dub mixing six brand new album tracks. We eagerly await the results of those sessions. Starfish Records' Poppy Seeds were in next with engineer Adrian Breakspear, and then the ever-familiar yet never-substandard Ali Love popped in for a New Year chinwag, as well as some serious mixing of album tracks over two days with partners in crime, Steve Dub, Seggs and our own engineer Joe Hirst. And then just as The Neve was turning its wise head towards the humble month of February, no less than Natalie Imbruglia checked in for a few days. Our favorite rock chick from down under was mixing two album tracks with Ben Hillier producing and Dave McCracken engineering.

Head here for CVs: Finn Eiles, & Joe Hirst

Miloco Two - The Toyshop

Before checking in to the mixing haven of The Neve, Ali Love, Steve Dub and Seggs were nursing the remainders of their New Year hangovers in The Toyshop, with Miloco engineer Joe Hirst. Joe stuck around for the next few days when Dave Tonge was in, and then those big bad Audio Bully's were back in Miloco's prestigious gadget room for two weeks of hard-graft with trusty assistant Mark Allaway to lend his services. Indie-poppers The Sunshine Underground, and producer Jon Collyer were in working on some demos for the next seven days, leaving the remainder of the month for Ali, Steve and Seggs to finish off a good month's work.

Miloco Three - The Square

The original Hoxton-based Miloco studio opened its doors to the legendary Howie B and protege Metric. Howie was remixing - with the assistance of Dean Curtis - Metric's new single. Aussie alt-rocker Charles Campbell-Jones continued his relationship with Miloco engineer Ben Thackeray when they worked an all-dayer on four brand new album tracks. We were then thrilled to have London's hottest blues songstress, Gillian Glover, in mixing down some album tracks with producer Tom Wilcox again with Ben engineering. Next up, the brilliant brass-bubbly Devonshire outfit, Rumble Strips, were making good use of The Square's versatile facilities with Iain Gore producing, followed by the awesome multi-national success story that is Lucas Secon, in with our very own success story, Pete Hofmann. The remainder of January for The Square mostly saw a scattering of day sessions by Jack Penate, The Dears and the Engineers all engineered by our own Finn Eiles and then Glaswegian alt-rocker Correcto rounded off the month with a few days working on his new album with Miloco engineer, Laurence Aldridge.

Two more CV's: Ben Thackeray & Pete Hofmann

Miloco Four - The Garden

Roadrunner Records' new signing Sanctity were straight into The Garden for six days of mixing, some no-doubt very scary, yet very enthralling metal, with Miloco's Matt Hyde engineering alongside producer Colin Richardson. They were followed by Weekender Records' Dogs, who were finishing tracking their new album for the next five days with Steve Musters offering his technical expertise. The sublime folk-rock of Alberta Cross was up next to bless the inner walls of The Garden recording some acoustic tracks; Finn Eiles was engineering that session. Modern psych-blues maestros, The Fields came in for a whopping eight days of work, albeit with the fine help of Miloco's Ben Thackeray and Darren Simpson recording a set of b-sides. Lucky Jim was back in at the end of the month for a day session with Finn Eiles. A very productive start to 2007 for The Garden, we feel.

Some CV action: Matt Hyde

Miloco Five - The SSL

Legendary Brit songwriter, Nicky Chinn started off activities for The SSL. He was in for five days with assistant Jon Olliffe, mixing four tracks from his forthcoming album. That eccentric Welsh rapping marvel, Akira The Don, was in next with Miloco's Matt Foster, doing a day's worth of mixing on a single. For the remainder of January, The SSL adopted Xtaster's Johnny Panic, who was accompanied by producer and engineer Chris Sheldon and assistant Jon Olliffe. The three were in for 12 days mixing tracks from Johnny's forthcoming long player.

Some more CV action: Matt Foster

Miloco Seven & Eight - Musikbox & The Pool

The last two studios in the round-up warmed up into the new year. Ali, Steve and Seggs mainly occupied Miloco's newest studio, Musikbox, over three stints with input from Miloco's very accomplished Joe Hirst and Ferg Peterkin. Charles Campbell-Jones came in at the end of January for a day's recording with Ben Thackeray engineering. First in at The Pool were those fine gentlemen, Turin Brakes, who completed two sessions over ten days with Ethan Johns at the production and engineering helm. They were in taking advantage of our wonderful spacious live room. The lovely Jenna G also made an appearance towards the end of the month. She had a couple of days in The Pool with engineer Martin Jenkins.

Two more CV's: Martin Jenkins & Ferg Peterkin

So to conclude, Miloco's first steps into the 2007 wilderness were quite simply, good ones. So pack up your clothes, weapons and effects pedals and come join us in our quest for world domination. Or, if you simply want to emulate the bunch of Milocees mentioned above and immerse yourself in the Miloco recording experience (the trekking through wilderness/world domination thing is purely metaphorical, for now), you know what to do...

Arctics reveal Gardens ghostly secrets!

Yes it's true! Those world-conquering Sheffield ruffians, The Arctic Monkeys, have reported there is a ghost living in Miloco's studio, The Garden.

The NME have reported that in an interview with Alex Turner, the Monkeys' singer said there was "a young girl, 'Elsie', haunting the chamber". The band have been in The Garden recording their second album, and they have claimed that unexplained whispers have appeared on past recordings. hmmmm.... To check their story click here.

If you were undecided over whether to purchase their next album, that should do it! Likewise, those undecided over whether to book a session at The Garden, you now definitely should. Go on, go and meet Elsie. We're sure she's lovely! We'll have her trained up as our next tea-girl, no sleep required!

New Microphone - LOMO 19A19

As you should have come to expect, we at Miloco are always improving and expanding on the equipment on offer to our clients. This month we have bolstered The Square's microphone collection with a LOMO 19A19 valve microphone, fresh in from Georgia.

For those who enjoy the low-end fullness, comfortable top end and mid-frequency clarity of a U47, the 19A19 should satisfy your palette. Many producers and engineers have compared it's capsule to sounding like the infamous AKG C12.

Not only is it superb for vocals, it also serves brilliantly for single ambient recordings of drum kits and acoustic instruments. You will be especially blown away by its treatment of acoustic strings, so check it out next time you're at The Square.

Klaxons - "Myths of the Near Future"

Although clearly one of the hottest-tips for this year, many forget that these South Londoners were one of the crucial instigators of the trendy 'nu-rave' scene. Debut album, Myths of the Near Future's exquisite blend of cosmic imagery and melodic art-rock look set to bring them up to speed with the rest of the band-wagon aspirants, and actually earn them the recognition they deserve as pioneers of contemporary electro-pop.

Klaxons were in The Garden in 2006 with James Ford producing and Jimmy Robertson engineering, working on a number of tracks from the album.

Towers Of London - "I'm A Rat"

Donny Tourette returns with the Towers of London with this single. it's air-raid siren intro and Guns N Roses guitar riff is reminiscent of early Manic Street Preachers with the added colourisation of Donny's vocals.

The b-sides to this single were recorded in the Garden in late 2006 with engineer and producer Tristan Ivemy. Those mighty Towers won the studio time at our 2006 summer Miloco 5-a-side football tournament (see above).

Released 5th February 2007
Bloc party - "A Weekend In The City"

As the title suggests, the hugely-anticipated follow up to 'Silent Alarm' mainly focuses on many people's favourite pastime, that is going out and altering minds, in this case within the depths of London's bustling East End. And no one tells a party story better than someone whose name includes the word. Taking their melodically euphoric indie rock to a darker level, Bloc Party's second album has all the qualities to make 2007 well-and-truly their year.

Bloc Party were in the Garden studios during the summer of 2006 recording strings for the album with producer Garrett Lee.
