![]() The story so far...
This July we're celebrating the sixth-month milestone since we officially cut the ribbons on our fantastic new Producer and Engineer management company, Interface. It's been a fantastic year so far for Sophie and her fine roster of talent, and here's why... At the start of the year, Interface announced the momentous news that the production duo of Steve 'Dub' Jones and Segs were joining the group. They've both been relentlessly busy since, working on new projects with several fresh and fast-rising new artists, including Vanessa Brown, Aynzli Jones, Tommy Sparks and Rescue Cat. Joining Steve and Segs in the much coveted engineer's chair on all of their projects this year has been another Interface star, Ben Thackeray, ensuring the full Interface effect was felt all-round!. The company also secured the talents of producer/engineer Iain Gore, who has so far this year enjoyed the success of Hadouken!'s Music For An Accelerated Culture, which he co-mixed at Miloco's Yard studio. Iain has recently been kept busy engineering a Glasvegas session at Alpha Centauri, and was spotted down at The Garden with Archie Bronson Outfit. Elsewhere, our other studio super-heroes have been flying. The release of the much-hyped Alphabeat debut, This Is Alphabeat, had the glistening names of both Pete Hofmann and Finn Eiles on the credit sheet. Besides Alphabeat, Pete has continued his formidable partnership with pop-Producer Richard X on projects such as St Etienne, Neon Neon and Sam Sparro, as well as mixing tracks for The Audio Bullies, The Paradiso Girls and long-term collaborators Jewels and Stone. Finn has been locked away in various Miloco studios with the legendary production duo of Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, working tirelessly on the forthcoming Madness album, which we are of course eagerly looking forward to. Before the Madness sessions, Finn was also working alongside Clive with the ska-punk band, The King Blues. Our rock and metal engineer par excellence, Matt Hyde, has been ploughing through another unforgettable year. Fresh off the back of two Grammy nominations at the end of 2007, Matt has enjoyed the success of the new Bullet For My Valentine album, Scream Aim Fire, on which he engineered alongside producer Colin Richardson. At the start of the Summer, Matt was in Miloco's Engine Room once again with Colin, to mix the fast-approaching fourth Slipknot album, and has also recently accredited himself to the limited edition double-sided live DVD of The Subways' second album, All Or Nothing. Moving on, Mark Rankin has too been excelling himself beyond belief. Besides being a key force in the creation of Adem's massive critical success, Takes, Mark has continued his unstoppable partnership with producer Paul Epworth on the debut album from Los Angelean disco king Sam Sparro. Mark has also acquainted himself with the much-hyped Golden Silvers, Jay Jay Pistolet, and Belfast rockers, In Case Of Fire. Next up comes Ferg Peterkin. So far this year Ferg has pledged his name to the album sleeves of two fantastic debuts: The Maccabees' Colour It In and The Rascals' Rascalize. Currently Stateside with producer Ben Hillier, Ferg is engineering the new Depeche Mode album, and showing his face back in London every now and then to work with the exciting new singer-songwriter Josephine Oniyama. Another Interface-represented hotshot, Joe Hirst, has continued his rise to infinity with an engineering credit on the ninth dEUS album, Vantage Point. Joe has also been heavily-involved in the 2008 solo ventures of Portishead's Beth Gibbons, as well as the much-hyped dance outfit Primary 1. One of the many Miloco events of 2008 was the establishment of the partnership with London School of Sound, to run LSS studio courses at a selection of Miloco Studios. With the courses fully up and running it's been great that Interface engineer Matt Foster has played an integral role in the tutoring side of the programs. Besides LSS, Matt has been engineering numerous projects throughout the year too, including Alex James, Ishia, Harry J Cena, Keith Saunders and Sasha. ... which brings the hottest producer / engineer roster on the planet up to the half-way point of 2008, for a quick gasp of air, dash of liquid and the odd Kit Kat or two, before diving straight back in to the action packed forthcoming months. Many congratulations to Sophie Rankin and the whole gang for making such a successful start to the company's life. To enquire after any of the Interface producers and engineers, please call us at the office on 020-7232-0008. Let's take a trip down Holywell Lane where we will find our studio-searching spotlight illuminating our glorious band tracking room, The Garden... In the thirty years since it was built, The Garden's status as one of the great London studios has never failed to keep on growing, and today the combination of its fantastic Shoreditch location, vintage-cool studio vibe, hefty recent refurbishments and incredible-sounding live room has put it well-and-truly ahead of the chasing pack of other band tracking rooms. Occupying a characteristic basement floor of a period building in the East End, the studio is centred around a control room containing a Neve V3 console with Flying Faders and Boxer T2 monitors. On the other side of a huge glass divide sits the studio's legendary live room, notorious for its awesome recreation of the classic Led Zep drum sound. A dead booth provides an option for a completely different sound from the live room, and a versatile corridor and quirky coalbunker are also on hand to serve as additional amp recording areas. We've also been building up a collection of backline gear for the studio, which includes Marshall cabs and heads, an Ampeg SVT and a Hammond Organ. Recent refurbishment work includes a fresh paint job throughout the studio, some brand new carpets in the control room, and some very hip wall hangings adding some more flavour to the joint. We've also installed a projector in the control room pointing through to the live area and creating a whole host of cool lighting effects. It all amounts to The Garden's ever-increasing status as London's coolest and most popular band tracking studio. Recent albums created in the room include the forthcoming Late of the Pier debut, The Long Blondes' Couples, Madness's forthcoming release, Spiritualized's Songs in A&E, and the multi-platinum Arctic Monkeys album, Favourite Worst Nightmare. So why wait any longer? For bookings and enquiries call Vicki at the Milloco office on 0207-232-0008, or email vicki@miloco.co.uk Check out The Garden's official webpages: www.miloco.co.uk/studios/garden.php.
Studio HighlightsIt was great to see scores and scores of musicians from all walks of life clearly feeling the need to get their creative summer juices flowing in June, and what's even better is that they knew exactly the best place to come...
The mixing stages of both Madness and Slipknot albums came pile-driving into the month of June. Accompanying Madness in The Yard were
producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, who were of course joined by Interface engineer Finn Eiles. The Engine Room-based Slipknot crew were
being steered by producer Colin Richardson and Interface engineer Matt Hyde.
Meanwhile over at Hoxton Square, we were losing track of the weeks spent by Miloco-favourites Jamie T and engineer Ben Coupland who were coasting along
on the making of Jamie's next record. Further North in Kentish Town, Musikbox was playing host to Tommy Sparks and producer Mike Crossey, who were
heads down and grafting away on some brand new material. The Sparks entourage returned to NW5 later on in the month, shortly followed by Vanessa Brown, who was
continuing her fine work with Interface producers Steve Dub and Segs, and Miloco in-house engineer Laurence Aldridge.
The Garden, all the while, was enjoying a chain of intriguing folk walk through its welcoming doors. Producer/Engineer Steve Osbourne moved into our Shoreditch
tracking room for a week to work with Kissy Sell Out, and then made way for the history-making event of Miloco and LSS's first ever
tutorial program, starring Interface's Matt Foster who drawing from his wealth of engineering experience endeavoured to enlighten the aspiring youth of today,
and potential stars of tomorrow! The ever-so exciting Florence and the Machine checked in towards the end of June with producer James Ford and
engineer Jimmy Robertson.
Our West London abodes were caught up in the full surge of June's activity as well. Sofa Sound welcomed into its arms the return of those Brit-Rock big-timers
Stereophonics who turned up in the fine company of producer Jim Lowe. It was also great to see Zero 7 back at Miloco, when they popped into our
Turnham Green SSL haven last month. Further up the road in Willesden Green, and our staggeringly good new SSL mix room, Alpha Centauri, was busy
ushering in the first clients of its commerical era. Queuing up at the gates of the UK's Best Spec'd Mix Room were Polly Scattergood and engineer Kevin Paul,
Mantis and the Prayer and engineer James Lewis, and Detroit Social Club who came mixing with Producer/Engineer Mike Crossey.
Finally, back at the Slipknotted Leroy Street HQ, the building's two other studios (Toyshop and Pool) were firing on all cylinders too. Producer Ben Hillier and
Interface engineer Ferg Peterkin were busy tracking material with up-and-coming songwriter Josephine Oniyama in The Pool, whilst upstairs in The Toyshop we
welcomed back the wonderful Patrick Wolf, who was working with engineer Andy Savours.
... and so it was that the nutshell assigned to June's studio highlights was satisfyingly filled.
