Long-let Rooms Available in Hornsey!
Get your hands on your own private creative space...

Welcome all, to our action-packed Midsummer Messageboard. We commence with the exciting announcement of 2 newly-available programming rooms located at our Hornsey complex in North London. If you're looking for your own personal space to work in, we've got a couple of real crackers up our never-ending wizard sleeves of fantastic rooms!

Hornsey Suites 4 & 6 are perfect spaces for producers, engineers, musicians and writers. They are both spacious rooms benefiting from natural light. Each have a separate recording area and small isolation booth. The rooms are air-conditioned, have monitored alarm systems and 24 hour access around the clock. The same idea applies here to all our other longterm suites, and that is we provide you with a space, and you equip it to your own requirements and wishes...

The complex is based in a handy North London location near to Archway and Finsbury Park stations, which provide great connections to the rest of the city. You'll be part of a creative and vibey environment that contains 4 other suites rented out by Miloco. The complex provides shared amenities including a kitchen and rec room.

We have one room available now and the other available in mid-August, and so we are now taking enquiries. Due to the well-documented imbalance between supply and demand in the current long-let studio market, we would suggest getting your skates on to avoid disappointment.

Black Rock Update
Swimming pool is built, plus we have new bedroom photos...

Since introducing our sumptuous new Santorini residential in March, we've been eagerly awaiting news on the completion of Black Rock's swimming pool and jacuzzi. So we're now thrilled to be able to announce that the builders' work is done and they are in use on the very first sessions taking place at the studio.

The opening of the pool is the icing on the cake for this sensational residential recording destination. Built outside the house on a large patio area, the pool is engulfed by coastal views. Total luxury is the word here. Guests can bask in the sunshine on the bathing deck and take a refreshing plunge in the crystal blue waters of the pool, while on the raised terrace next to the pool a barbecue will be cooked and served in the shaded outdoor dining area, or in the sunshine if you choose!

We have more Black Rock news from inside the villa too. The snappers have been back round to take some fantastic shots of the five deluxe en suite bedrooms which guests will be staying in during sessions. These beautiful bedrooms have all been designed and presented to perfection. Each have their own en suite bath/shower facilities and lavish furnishings and decor, but you can of course read all about that and view various photos on the Miloco website by clicking here.

The first few clients have now been in to soak up the delights at Black Rock. We've had Joe Bonamassa, whose new album was recorded and mixed by Kevin Shirley. The Lauren Harris Band have since arrived at Black Rock, where they are currently recording a selection of new songs.

To follow in their footsteps and book studio time over in Santorini, please contact Tor at the Miloco office on 020-7232-0008. She can also be emailed at tor@miloco.co.uk.

The Engine Room and Pool Refurbishment
An incredible new-look studio complex, opening August 2009.

You may well have heard it on the grapevine already, but here's the official confirmation of the major refurbishment work at two of the studios at our Leroy Street HQ in SE1. The Engine Room and The Pool have both been undergoing a serious revamp this summer, and will be re-opened in August as two new-look studios which will offer a fresh, dynamic and exciting way of working. We have been keeping daily photo blogs on the site to track progress on the work, but read on to find out exactly what we are doing, and what the new studios will offer once we cut the ribbons next month...

The Engine Room - 'Bridge Calling Engine Room'
Special £400.00 / day offer on control room until end of July

Our flagship room has been undergoing a radical and incredibly exciting new upgrade over two phases. Phase 1 is now finished. We have now completely refurbished the Control Room bringing it firmly into the 22nd Century. Not only does it now have a fresh and exciting look with brand new lighting, but we have also relocated the Protools from the room to reduce the background noise. Add to this a Bryston amplifier to enhance the nearfield monitors and the room is certainly one of the best mix studios in London. During July you can book the new Engine Room (control room only), for a special £400.00 / day while we continue refurbishing the live space.

We have also built a secondary wall outside the control room to increase the sound isolation between the live room, aka The Bridge. The live space will be converted into three very useable recording areas: two smaller booths - one dead, one live - and a large-ish recording area that will be perfect for recording string quartets and drums. The Bridge will be ready for use from August.

Now here is the twist.... You can either use The Bridge (live room) with The Engine Room (control room) for £600.00 / day. Or you can now book The Bridge and Engine Room separately. The Engine Room without The Bridge will be £500.00 / day.

To use the Bridge as a stand-alone recording area, we can arrange for a Protools HD rig to be brought in. Engineers can then bring in their outboard, and voila ! - we now have a stand-alone overdub/editing/recording studio for £150.00 / day without Protools or £200.00 / day with. Beam me up Scotty!

The Pool - 'To Be Or Not To Be'

The Pool has been closed for a complete refurbishment and rebuild. Due to open in August 2009 the new look Pool will present clients with more choice, versatility and a whole new way of working.

Due to popular demand we are building a control room which will rise above the live space. The room will take up the space that was formerly our loading bay. Now engineers and producers who prefer a separate control room for recording will be able to take advantage of the Pool's incredible tracking space from behind closed doors.

However being a versatile company we do not want to cramp the style of those producers who love all things open. With 24 hours notice and for bookings that are longer than 1 week, we will be able to relocate the control room equipment and set it up as it used to be in the live room, meaning extreme open recording continues.... If you choose to record this way you will now be able to use the newly built control room as a large recording booth.

In addition, we are also building a new raised drum booth, which for those who know the Pool will be located in the far end of the room, again looking down into the live space. Add to this a complete new paint job, relocated entrance, new lighting and many acoustic enhancements and we believe we will have created one of the most exciting tracking rooms in London.

Photos coming soon... Oh and the new price of the room is down from £600 / day to £500 / day...

We'll be re-opening our Leroy Street building in style later this summer, but more on that nearer the time. If you would like to find out more on the refurbishment work on either The Engine Room or Pool, then don't hesitate to get in touch with the office on 020-7232-0008.

Studio Highlights

We should squeeze in a quick studio roundup, after all the building works may have taken centre stage last month but there's still been plenty going on in our other studios to tell you about.

Of course Leroy Street hasn't seen much else other than cement mixers and builders bums, however The Engine Room still held a session with electro band Aeroplane and Miloco engineer Oli Wright, and Nadine Shah worked a couple of sessions with Ben Hillier up in The Toyshop. The last clients to use The Pool in its former environment included Friendly Fires and producer Paul Epworth, and Mpho who worked with Pablo Knight.

In East London, The Van Jets spent nearly an entire month in The Garden with producer Jon Gray. Meanwhile the Square played host to Charles Campbell-Jones and Interface's Ben Thackeray, who were followed by Kate Jackson and the legendary Bernard Butler. Over in Highbury, Interface's Matt Foster worked with Bad Girlz in the Yard before Chipmunk came to stay for a few weeks.

Over in London's North-Western postcodes, Musikbox was in full swing with Rodrigo Y Gabriela, who clocked up a load of mix time with producer Colin Richardson and Interface's Matt Hyde. Further West at Assault & Battery 2, Ian Brown continued work with producer Dave McCracken, and Red Light Company checked in with Dimitri Tikovoi. Across the hall in Alpha Centauri, it was an honour to welcome Yusuf Islam and engineer Rupert Cobb to Miloco. We also had the pleasure of Dead or Alive's company at the end of the month.

Beyond the peripheries of the M25, our Surrey residential Fisher Lane was booked out by chart-riding NDubz for the main duration of June. Up in Liverpool, Mike Crossey and Jim Anderson ploughed on with the new Blood Red Shoes album, while across the Pennines in West Yorkshire, The Chairworks was in use by Yann Tiersen and producer Ken Thomas...

... which pretty much sums things up in a small but satisfying nutshell! Follow in the footsteps of June's Milo troopers and book yourself in for some studio time. Linda can be contacted for all studio bookings inside London at linda@miloco.co.uk, and Tor can look after those interested in any of our studio's outside the Big Smoke - email tor@miloco.co.uk. Both can be contacted at the Miloco office on 020-7232-0008.
