Three days of beside-the-seaside mayhem? Yes please, we said. And with that Miloco descended on Brighton like so many
friendly eager locusts.
The first ever Great Escape took place the other week (18th-20th May to be accurate) and London's Favourite Recording Studio just had to be there. Here are a few tidbits about what we got up to. Industry talks/presentations/chinwags. Highlights: How to Break New Bands, with Steve Lamacq & Domino's Laurence Bell; Ken Scott revealing the secrets behind Ziggy, Transformer, Aladdin Sane and much, much more; DIY Music Industry, hosted by John Webster and feat. Phil Nelson and Dean Marsh; Peter Hook having a chat with (the always necessary to clarify) James Brown, from Loaded; and the opportunity to escape the gales and chew the fat with friends old and new over a pint or seven. Live music. Getting through four lots of shoe leather and eight spare eardrums, these are the bands we got to see: The Bees (marvellous), Les Incompetents (mad as balloons), Howling Bells, The Bellarosa Connection (destined for gigantic things), Tapes N Tapes, Richard Hawley (beautiful), This Et Al, Hot Club De Paris (splendid), Alexis Strum (in a church), The Spinto Band, Tiny Dancers (not that small), Magneta Lane, Midlake (wispy beards), Vincent Vincent & The Villians (ace, of course) and The Hush Sound. There were doubtless others too, but to be honest there's just something about 72 hours of relentless booze and music that rides roughshod over one's recollective powers... See you next year (minus the feckin' wind 'n' rain). Another great new studio under Miloco's wing
Not content with being an internationally reknowned DJ and musician, Pete has built a superb state of the art studio. Not surprisingly it's perfectly suited to dance acts - in fact the forthcoming album from X-press 2 and imminent Roots Manuva single have just been mixed there! Some more details: Nestling in kooky Kentish Town, it boasts one of the few remaining Harrison Series 10 digitally controlled analogue 64-channel console, Protools, ATC 3-way active monitoring, a good live room and day-lit control room, an extensive selection of analogue keyboards (perfect for retro-lovin' beat makers the world over), separate private lounge and kitchen, as well as more compressors, equalisers, and effect units than you could wish for. Not bad, eh? For full information click here. As before, we're going to give it a trial run and see if it can deliver the quality you've all come to expect from our existing studios. So, if you'd like to sample this excellent studio's facilities anytime during July and August, just get in touch with Sophie in the usual way. For these two months only the studio's available at the krrrrazy knockdown price of £300 per day, so I'd book it quick if I were you. Studio Round-upMay Pole imagery alert! Yes, not unlike those bell-clad loons who sweep about town squares wrapping endless coloured ribbons around a large vertical stick, the Miloco diary's been a swirling mass of activity this month. Let the rundown commence... Miloco One - The Neve Room
Our premier mix environment was so busy this month we were handing out cheese-counter tickets to control access to the rec
room. Day one saw mega album-releasing The Futureheads in and mixing forthcoming single tracks with Ben Hillier, before
Domino's pool-shark James Yorkston was in sinking some long pots with producer Paul Webb, with old friend Phill Brown
engineering. And then it was the Return Of The Dub, as old mucker Steve Dub returned to his favourite hunting ground for a
string of projects. First we had ex-Beta Band boys, The Aliens, in mixing their forthcoming single, and as those gents departed
Sunshine Underground popped back for a few days, likewise with Mr Dub, and ably engineered by superb up and coming engineer
Ben Thackeray. Then it was time for The Chemical Brothers to grace us once more for a week of recording
vocals and mixing for their forthcoming album. After that, it was amp and snarl o'clock, as US bigwigs Trivium took up residence
with Colin Richardson and Matt Hyde for the first week of what will no doubt be a mighty metal monster of a session.
Take a gander at the gents' CVs here: Matt Hyde, Ben Miloco Two - The Toyshop
Regular readers of this diary will already know precisely who spent most of the month making marvellous musical mischief in
Miloco Two, but for those of you new to this game, it was of course none other than Jamie T. When Mr T(oyshop) did deign
to let the place out of his sight, hip hop overlord Rodney P slipped in for a week's rhythm ruffling. The Futureheads popped by
doing some acoustic tracks with our guitar man Finn Eiles on the desk. And then there was just time for a wee session from
Plan B and Jimmy Robertson before Jamie & Ben Coupland stormed back in and demanded all their toys back.
A CV or two: Matt Foster, Finn Miloco Three - The Square
The Square doesn't get the largest of reports this month as there was only one resident all month, albeit a mighty fine
one. The Servant started off the month as they ended it, unleashing all kinds of merry racket into the Hoxton air, for
the benefit and delight of producer Jim Lowe. And they'll be here for most of next month too. Round the corner in
Shoreditch however...
Miloco Four - The Garden
...there were a shed load of people getting busy. Young James Yorkston popped in for a day before his Neve Room pool
sessions got underway, and Toyshop exile Jamie T came in for a few days tracking too. Freeform Five were also back with
master desk handler Pete Hofmann at the reins, and The Futureheads then stuck their smart haircuts into yet another one of
our studios. Finn Eiles was on the desk for that and he also hung around to see Groove Armada sail into town with an
eight-piece string section by their side. Our last Spot-The-Ball prize winner then laid claim to his prize with a day for
band The Fractures before the next week saw US critical acclaim magnets The Spinto Band spend a few days mixing B-sides with
Ben Thackeray. The Good Shoes then padded in for the first of two days with Jimmy Robertson, and then Pete Hofmann spent
the weekend with Matt Johnson. And yes, there's still more! The often-injured freshly-signed phenomenon that is The Klaxons
spent 3 days tracking B-sides with producer Erol Alkan and Finn engineering, before Scissors For Lefty popped by to say hello,
likewise with the boy Eiles. Kathryn James came in to prove that you just can't move for retro-spelt Christian names nowadays
(and to work with producer Justin Grayson and engineer Ben Thackeray). And last but far from least, The Chemical Brothers swung by.
Which is always nice.
A CV you haven't had the chance to see yet: Pete Miloco Five - The SSL
Ok, so the Catalans kicked their arse, but that's no reason to doubt the quality of Highbury's other Arena of Delights! This
month The SSL Room was pretty much a permanent home for alphabetical-listing supremacists 4 Thieves. They were in mixing album
tracks for a good few weeks with producer Chris Sheldon. Irish guitar wielders (I don't think they're welders too, but I could
be wrong) Numinous were also in for a week alongside noisenik Matt Hyde. Next up, Island's new recruit Molly Beanland was in
for a couple of days mixing a single with Tom Ingleby, before The Mighty Roars came to gnash their pearly whites and Frenchie
did a day with renowned beat man Matt Foster. And to wrap up the month Guy Massey spent a weekend getting himself in a right
Solid State, and with that May was done.
Miloco Six - Watch this space......Could it be you? You want it to be don't you. Course you do...Available throughout July & August - see the 'Another great new studio...' article for details. Well there you have it, five great studios satisfying a plethora of superb bands spanning every genre worth knowing. Consider us, if you will, the mighty fist of aural excellence upper-cutting the competition with glee en route to a hit parade near you. Admittedly we're about to have six studios, so, at least for a while, that imagery will have to be parked, but it'll do for now. Seconds out, another month is underway! Get on the blower today and call Sophie sharpish on 020 7232 0008. You can also drop her a line via sophie@miloco.co.uk, but either way you wanna make sure Miloco's in your corner. |

SSL Additions
We've been treating our lovely SSL Room to some new bits and bobs. First of all, following requests from some of our regular customers we've invested in a new custom-built monitor switching unit. This means users can now run up to four separate sets of speakers! We are also installing Sky TV so no kick of a World Cup football (or opponent's shin) need ever be missed and, last but not least, rumours abound that we've upgraded the hand soap to...wait for it...Imperial Leather! What greater indication could there be of the luxurious lengths we go to at Miloco to make you, our clients, happy?
MILC shakes its booty
The latest issue of MILC came out last month and there are still a few copies left! Just head along to miloco.co.uk/magazine, select issue no.5 and hand over precisely none of your earth pennies! What? It's free? But it's so good! I know, crazy isn't it... Anyway, as free as it is, we don't stint on quality and nutrition over at MILC. This month's issue is as silver-topped as they come, with profiles of Toyshop-loving Jamie T and the rarely-lost-at-sea Klaxons. There's also a giant interview with New Orleans lovin' Skitz, talking about hombre Rodney P and the whole heap of projects they're involved with. You can also add to that the usual heap of industry news, another opportunity to salve your cluttered conscience with Push The Button AND a profile of office angel/bookings demon Sophie Nathan.
6Music & HMV know where it's at
BBC 6Music and HMV have just proved that recording and/or mixing at Miloco is THE WAY to get your band on the map. But as the following paranormal investigation indicates, that fact was never in doubt...
Exhibit A: BBC 6Music has the number 6 in its title. Fact. Miloco studios are about to start a trial run on their SIXTH studio. See the parallel? Feel the trembling vibrations of happenstance? Remember that sensation.
Exhibit B: HMV are initials. FACT! Those initials could quite easily stand for Heavenly Miloco Virtuosos. See that parallel? Feel the waves of otherworldly truth beating at the crumbling veneer of your closed mind? Of course you do. I think we've proved a point or two there, don't you. Well hold on to your hats, because it all gets even more spine-tingling when you consider the following: Exhibit C: BBC 6Music's albums of the day during the last two weeks of May included no less than 7 Miloco releases, including The Futureheads, Zero 7 & Howling Bells. That's a whole lorra daily play-listed material either recorded and/or mixed at our great studios. Exhibit D: HMV's recommended records of the week included 5 out of 6 recorded and/or mixed at Miloco studios, including a couple of the above plus Boy Kill Boy, Pet Shop Boys & Hot Chip. That's 83% for you percentage junkies out there. So there you have it, astonishing evidence of 'other forces' operating in our world and astonishing evidence of the ridiculous levels of critical and commercial success Miloco projects go on to achieve. Quite a double whammy I think you'll all agree.
