Miloco 5-a-side showdown approaching...
It's drawing closer and this one's going to be huge!! So once more, on Thursday July 12, on Battersea Park, Miloco shall be holding their fourth annual 5-a-side football tournament, where music industry folks past, present and future will be playing out of their skins in attempt to attain a free day in one of Miloco's first-rate studios. We nearly have enough teams to complete the line-up for the most sought-after prize in music industry sport. Teams are already making up their kits, planning their match day hair-dos, practising their penalties, waking up every morning to do 150 one-armed press ups, on each arm. It's even got to the point where record labels' insurance companies have gone into admin overdrive to make sure their precious rock stars and their priceless guitar-wielding limbs are not ignored in the dangers of sporting combat. Thankfully there were only a few bleeding knee-caps last year, still this is not to be taken lightly. Think you can hack it? Were you born a champion? Can you take the crown from the mighty Towers of London (last year's victors)? Well you are running out of time to get your team registered, so get moving. Teams already playing: TOWERS OF LONDON (Defending champions) FX RENTALS (Won't lend you any favours this time) 679 RECORDS (2005 champions, they want their title back) GILLIAN GLOVER TEAM (Will surely have an amazing goalkeeper) VIRGIN RECORDS (Came 2nd last year, definitely a favourite) UNDERGROUND HEROES (Will they prove their heroics on the pitch?) GRAND UNION HI-JACK (Their name suggests imperial domination...) BMG PUBLISHING (They own big songs, so they might own big players!) STEPHEN BUDD (Boast plenty of budding talent) ASPIRE ENTERTAINMENT (Will come to entertain, will play to win!!) ARK RECORDINGS ("The animals entered 5-a-side, hurrah hurrah!") GILKICKER (Will kick yo' ass!) MINDLOOP (They like their mind games - it works for Jose Mourinho...) KOSH (Bosh! Back of the net!) MILOCO (The hosts don't have a hope in hell. Boooooo!) Are you going to join this list? If you fancy taking on these teams, do not hang around any longer in entering a side. Remember the first four teams will win a free day in a Miloco studio with a top-professional engineer. How often does that happen? To enter a team call Richard now on 020-7232-0008 or email richard@miloco.co.uk.
Great Escape Festival 2007: Miloco's Story
It was that time of year again, where the music world rounded up it's troops for three days of fun and laughter in the coastal town of Brighton. Reminiscent of Quadrophenia, the mods and rockers amongst us scuttled down to the seaside for the weekend, only without the Lambrettas and Harleys, nor any rioting on the beach, nor spiralling self-dignity ending in a dramatically ambiguous episode where scooters may or may not get driven off a cliff in an amphetamine-fuelled rage. Other than that, spot on rock n' roll likeness!! With such a great line-up, not to mention lengthy one, a firm decision-making approach was needed to get the most out of the festival. Thursday night did not disappoint, as we witnessed fantastic sets by the likes of Goose, Ghosts, and Miloco clients Foals, Late of the Pier and the wonderful Ali Love. We staggered back to the Holiday Inn, stomachs chock-full of beer and burger. We kipped. Friday kicked off with the sea breeze blowing the cobwebs from our dreary eyelashes. Sheltering in the Udderbelly tent, we witnessed the bizarre pairing of Howard Marks and Sean Ryder mumble at each other. Growing impatient with waiting for Friday night's gigging action, we took asylum in the Queens Hotel for some 'hair of the dog' therapy. And we were then raring to go. First on the Friday night list was a rip-roaring performance by Miloco clients The Pistolas who tore up the Audio club at 6pm. We then shot off to the Red Roaster Cafe to hear the awesome vocals of acoustic songstress Adele, before departing for the show-stopping Gallows performance at The Zap - one to tell the Grandkids. We managed to fit in a quick visit to Pressure Point to see These New Puritans, before heading back to the seafront where Kitty Daisy and Lewis closed the Friday night shenanigans at the Beach Club. Saturday came, and our group sadly separated, but for those who were defiantly not going to leave quite yet, there was more fun to be had at gigs by Jamie Woo, Maths Class and The Strange Death of Liberal England. We wanted more - the queues had other ideas. The last train back to London was full of exhausted but satisfied drunk people. A detox loomed. So, it was great to see you all in Brighton. Congratulations to all the artists for putting on a blinding festival, especially to the army of our very own clients who wowed the crowds. We shall see you next year! Studio Round-upWhilst the Miloco office staff were gallivanting around Brighton, kicking up their heels and painting the town red (while of course enhancing our formidable reputations!), it was heads down for the jealousy-stricken studio left-behinds, in what was another hectic month across Miloco land. It wasn't all doom and gloom for them though, as firstly, they like their jobs. Don't be mistaken. Secondly, they were accompanied by another fantastically broad range of artists, which is how we like it. So without further-a-do, here's what's been going down... Miloco One - The Neve Room
After a valuable week of TLC in our flagship mix room in April, it was ready for a jam-packed
month of May. Things took off with the continuation of the As I Lay Dying session, with the
superstar producer/engineer pairing of Colin Richardson and Miloco's Matt Hyde mixing tracks for
the US Metal band's forthcoming album. Following them was a day's tracking session with
Cantinero, who had the fine expertise of Miloco's Pete Hofmann at the engineering helm. The
rest of the month's time in the Neve was gobbled up by Bristol's Malakai, who were accompanied
by the notorious Steve Dub and Seggs, as well as Miloco engineer Ben Thackeray.
An engineer CV for you: Ben Thackeray Miloco Two - The Toyshop
Pete Hofmann kicked off May upstairs at Leroy Street, he was on engineering duties for a Chung
King session. Not long after, UK Urban artist Donovan was in The Toyshop for a day, recording
album tracks with Miloco engineer Matt Foster. It was great to hear the experimental sounds of
Spider and the Flies in The Toyshop, who were in with Miloco's Ferg
Peterkin engineering. That was immediately followed by a two-day
tracking session with The Broken Hearts, who were in with record producer Nathan Whitey. Another
spin-off act signed off May in Miloco 2, when we welcomed Booty Luv (those lovely girls
previously of Big Brovaz notoriety) for a day's tracking with engineer Matt Foster.
Another CV: Matt Foster Miloco Three - The Square
Hoxton Square was filled up by a scattering of short sessions last month, beginning with
Toploader singer Joe Washbourn and his adorable curly locks. Joe was in with the brilliant
Dave Eringa producing and engineering, and proceeded to mix four album tracks. The fantastic
Late of the Pier came in next for two days with producer Erol Alkan and engineer Jimmy Robertson,
and tracked two singles, and then Adam Morley checked in for a day of work with Miloco engineer
Finn Eiles. There was no waiting around for Vita Ross who rolled up straight after with
producer Tom Wilcox and engineer Ben Thackeray, and then our old acquaintance Howie B used up
a day with Miloco engineer Joe Hirst. He may be an old acquaintance, but he looks as young
as ever!! Moving on, and next in were new band This Devasted Fan, whose Morrissey-esque name
might well be a household one after a little help from a very charming man, Miloco's Finn Eiles.
Mister Who was back at our studios for a day with our very own Joe Hirst, and then things were
wrapped up with a four-day session with Zeera Drake, who were tracking singles with producer
Matt Olivier. And that was May in The Square.
And another CV: Joe Hirst Miloco Four - The Garden
Down the road from Hoxton Square, it was great to see the awesome Spiritualized enjoying the
best part of a month at our fantastic Garden studio, albeit through a few power-cuts that
crippled the majority of East London!! Ahem. The Garden's owner, Matt Johnson (of The The fame)
made use of a day towards the end of the month with Miloco's Finn Eiles, as did XX Teens who
tracked a few album tracks in the company of Miloco assistant Darren Simpson. Short, but sweet.
And yet another CV: Finn Eiles Miloco Five - The SSL
So over at Highbury Corner and our SSL room was preparing for a prolific month of activity.
First up were Pyramids, in for three days with producer/engineer Head, mixing forthcoming album
tracks. They were followed by Anemo, who came in for a day of mixing with the prodigal James
Lewis producing and engineering. As well as a day in our Neve, Cantinero and Pete Hofmann
also pounced on a day in The SSL for a day's recording, before Saltpeter checked in for three days
of mixing with the help of Miloco assistant Adrian Breakspear. Nu-jazz maestros Acoustic
Ladyland were in next for a day, with engineer Finn Eiles supporting the production of frontman
Pete Wareham, and then we got a knock on the door by no-less than The Drifters, who with
producer/engineer Tom Frederikse were re-mixing a track. Fantastic. Mancunian prog-rockers
Oceansize saw out the rest of the month at Miloco 5 with producer Chris Sheldon, although before
they did, Lee Francis popped in for a day with engineer Roy Merchant, to mix a couple of
singles.
Two more CVs: Matt Hyde and Pete Hofmann Miloco Seven & Eight - Musikbox & The Pool
Our second Neve VR60 mix room got started with producer Imran Haniff and Miloco engineer
Matt Foster, who were making music for a BBC TV ident, coming to a television set near you.
They were both back for more ident work later in the month. Matt Foster was in fact back a day later,
this time to lend his engineering skills and wisdom to Craig Johnston, in making a new single.
The Pete Hofmann & Cantinero entourage moved north to Kentish Town for a couple of days to mix
a single, and were followed by a day's mixing with Tigerpicks, accompanied again by Mr. Hofmann.
Chung King came in for a day with Howie B and Joe Hirst to do some mixing, and then Vincent
Vincent and the Villains clocked up three days with producer/engineer Jason Cox. As for the
rest of May, having relocated from The Neve, Colin Richardson and Matt Hyde continued to
proceed with mixing the forthcoming As I Lay Dying album.
The Pool picked up May where it left April, with Aussie indie band Sparkadia completing another seven days with producer Ben Hillier and Miloco engineer Ferg Peterkin. Next in were the fabulous Foals, who with electronic maestro Kieran Hebden and Miloco engineer Mark Rankin spent a couple of days in our live tracking room. Those chirpy Underground Heroes returned for a few days of overdubbing with the dynamic duo of Paul Epworth and Mark Rankin, and then Kate Nash came in for a week to finish off her hugely anticipated debut album, again with Paul Epworth and Mark Rankin. The rest of the month was taken up by another one of Paul and Mark's proteges, Nick Harrison, apart from one day with the amazing Groove Armada, who were in recording with, you've guessed it, Mark Rankin. Do Paul and Mark ever leave that room? Interestingly a freakishly large bird nest has appeared in the roof. Suspicious. Last two CVs: Mark Rankin and Ferg Peterkin And so we wave goodbye to May. It was in fact the wettest May Britain has had in nearly a century, however if the start of June is anything to go by, and our office bodies and air con units will testify to this, things are heating up. Speaking of which, the excitement that the summer weather brings is clearly rubbing off on the music world, with more and more people being inspired to make a record, and hence booking out one of our fantastic studios. Seriously, studio time is being gobbled up faster than a sausage in a piranha pool, so to ensure you don't miss out on the Miloco experience this summer, call Sophie today on 020-7232-0008 or email her at sophie@miloco.co.uk. |

Pro Tools 7.3 in all 8 Miloco Rooms!
Our technical capacity is expanding at such a rate that we will soon be surely exploding with glee from our dictator-esque stanglehold!! Slight exaggeration, although we are pleased to be able to continue our collection of toys, the latest being Pro Tools 7.3, which is now featured in all of our eight studios, making our already sensational recording experience just that little bit better. The 7.3 upgrade gives users even more of what has made Pro Tools the world's leading sequencing software; more editing, mixing and automation features; powerful customization and grouping options; and improved video functionality and post-production workflows. Furthermore, 7.3 supports the latest M-Audio hardware, bringing you plenty more options in compatible interfaces. Now all you need to do is book some time with us, and try it out yourself. You won't be disappointed.
Never mind the rain, we were celebrating MILC!
So the dank month of May saw the return of MILC: our fantastic online portal of journalistic facts gathered from within the walls of our studio empire. We reached our tenth issue last month, causing modest celebrations, and were thrilled to fill it with an in-depth interview with the legendary producer Gareth Jones, who discussed everything from his 1980s career engineering bands such as Depeche Mode and Erasure, right through to his current project, These New Puritans, whose debut album is being made at Miloco's Square and Toyshop studios. And if you thought that was enough you were wrong. MILC 10 also proudly boasts a staff profile with our very own analogue gear expert, Mark Rankin, two new artist profiles with the mischievous Underground Heroes and the delectable Ripchord, as well as the usual Client Watch, Equipment Spotlight and Friends of Miloco features. It started in an udder, and ended up in the finest cuppa you'll ever drink. Step-a-dis-a-way, for the tenth issue of MILC.
Latest Releases
Released 18th June 2007 Chemical Brothers - 'Do It Again'
The first single from the legendary dance duo's sixth album has been pumping around the airwaves and download charts for some time leading up to the physical release. What makes it extra special to Miloco is that it features the funked-up vocals of another one of our clients, one Ali Love. The Chemical Brothers mixed their forthcoming album in the The Neve throughout 2006 and the start of 2007, with engineer Steve Dub. They also used The Toyshop for vocals and The Garden. www.thechemicalbrothers.com Released 28th May 2007 Mumm Ra - 'These Things Move In Threes'
They hail from Bexhill-On-Sea, and seem to love Thundercats (or hate them, seeing as they named themselves after the 'cats arch-enemy). Anyway with a lot of tooth-cutting and fanbase-building on this year's NME Awards Tour, Mumm Ra unveil their debut LP, which is filled with sing-a-long choruses, driving guitars, crashing drums and heartfelt vocals. Mumm Ra recorded vocals and mixed one album track in The Square in December 2006 with Miloco engineer Ben Thackeray. www.mumm-ra.com Released 14th May 2007 The Maccabees - 'Colour It In'
Having grown up in London, before moving to breathe in the fresh Channel air of Brighton, The Maccabees are the present-day darlings of the South-East. 'Colour It In' is a slice of guitar-pop brilliance, and that is that!! The Maccabees recorded three tracks in The Pool and mixed them in The Neve in Summer 2006, with producer Ben Hillier and engineer Ferg Peterkin. www.themaccabees.co.uk Released 7th May 2007 Jamie T - 'Sheila'
You may remember our favourite Wimbeldon ruffian released this cracking concoction of a rash of reggae, an inkling of indie and a splash of steeldrums last summer, but it was so darn good he had to treat us all to it again this year. Jamie T was tracking his debut album in The Toyshop throughout 2006 with engineer Ben Coupland. www.jamie-t.com Released 30th April 2007 Lucky Jim - 'Our Troubles End Tonight'
The press have been lured by this record's ability to capture the vibes of Bob Dylan and Neil Young back in the day, chuck them through a timewarp, with the end result sounding like they are emerging artists of today, if that makes sense!!! Better grab a copy and see for yourself. Lucky Jim were in tracking three album tracks in The Garden, as well as a single in The Neve, in January 2007 with Miloco engineer Finn Eiles. www.luckyjim.com To check out more of the Miloco releases of 2007, please look this way: www.miloco.co.uk/news/ newreleases |
