Studio Spotlight: Miloco One - The Engine Room
Welcome back all, to the thoroughly documented life of Miloco. It seems impossible to believe
that a month has passed since we last wrote to you all, but it's been fast-living here over the
past few weeks, and we've only just stopped to refill our woozy chests with a much-needed
fresh batch of oxygen.
We're kicking off our third bulletin of the year with our holy flagship studio from which the
Miloco family grows: Miloco One - The Engine Room. This well-renowned studio is located at our
HQ in SE1 near London Bridge and Terminal rehearsal studios, where it has been fulfilling many a musician's tracking and mix
needs for over two decades.
A hugely diverse space, the studio features a dynamic and spacious live room measuring 640 sq
feet, with a large isolation booth - together offering a vast range of acoustics controlled via
screens, and which comfortably fits a 5-piece band. Keyboardists amongst you can get you teeth
into a fantastic Yamaha Baby Grand, a classic Hammond organ and Leslie, with a Wurlitzer and Rhodes
also regularly available, whereas guitarists alike never seem reluctant to plug in and crank up
the room's Marshall cab and HiWatt head.
Directly visible from the live room and separated from it by two sets of sliding doors is the
control room, which has for years been one of the most popular mixing locations in the business.
It includes a Neve VR60 console, customised Munro speakers, a selection of nearfield monitors
and a huge amount of outboard, all-in-all contributing to a fantastic sonic purity that stands
easily on a par with the likes of Metropolis studios.
Boasting a dynamic and creative tracking space combined with an unbeatable mixing environment,
The Engine Room thrives off a rare quality to serve as a first-choice space for both recording
and mixing projects. Since its inception in the mid-to-late 80s, The Engine Room has continually
attracted the unquestionably good and the unrivalled great. Simply scatter a few stars across a
sheet, and the studio's CV will bring attention to its acquaintances with Oasis, The Chemical
Brothers, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Jarvis Cocker, Beth Gibbons, Arctic Monkeys, Ash,
Sugababes, KT Tunstall, Kate Nash, Foals and Vanessa Brown to name a mere few of many.
So, "how do we get in there?", we hear you crave in desperation. Well, please refrain from
selling kidneys to science, nor for that matter, taking your property deeds to the dog track.
The Engine Room goes out at very competitive rates for a central London studio of its superior
quality, so to find out more simply give Vicki a bell at the office on 020-7232-0008 or email

Miloco Nine - Sofa Sound Everyone in West London's talking about it!!!
Now with ten studio facilities under the Miloco banner, it has become a job in itself to keep
you good people up-to-speed on them all, hence with no time to waste we dive into our next
studio profile: Miloco Nine - Sofa Sound, based in Chiswick.
West London's recording landscape is of course undergoing considerable changes due to the sad
demise of Townhouse studios, however as we certainly regret having to bid our farewells to a
great London studio, we can inform you all that ten minutes down the road sits another splendid
little Miloco abode.
Wedged between the cosmopolitan Chiswick High Road and the leafy green spaces of Acton, and also
in close proximity to Metropolis studios, Sofa
Sound is a sumptuous studio in an equally plush part of town. Owned by legendary producer
Hugh Padgham, the studio is based around a state-of-the-art SSL G+ console with 62 mono and 4
stereo channels, Quested monitors and a Protools HD3 Accel rig with Apogee convertors, providing
32 inputs and 48 outputs.
The studio's mixing capacity is one of the best in the business, but what also
makes Sofa Sound extra special is the inclusion of a beautifully-crafted live room featuring
a Yamaha upright piano and with enough space
to allow clients to track 5-piece bands comfortably, as well as two booths which can both easily
fit a drum kit. What's more, clients can all-but sunbathe in a gloriously day-lit control room
featuring a large selection of digital and analogue gear. There are also spacious and leisurely
recreation areas as well as a gorgeous roof terrace providing magnificent views across West
London (beware of the risk of painful post-pub plunges!).
Out and about, Chiswick High Road is spoiled for choice with its selection of bars, cafes and
restaurants, however you can find a quieter suburban haunt a little further West in Acton. The
adjoining areas of Hammersmith, Shepherds Bush and Kensington are all a short bus or tube ride
away, and London's West End can be reached in roughly twenty minutes.
We've had a surge of great artists recently book time out in Sofa Sound, amongst them:
Portishead, Starsailor, Stereophonics, Guillemots, Nick Cave, Does it Offend You, Yeah? and
Mark Ronson. To follow in their footsteps, call Vicki in the office on 020-7232-0008 or email

Studio Highlights
Due to last month's letter solely focusing on the launch of our rather tasty Spanish
residential, El Cortijo, you were of course deprived of all reports on January's
activity from within our studios back home. Fear not, you can now be brought up-to-speed on
two month's worth of highlights - hahaha!! Don't worry, we're not going to impose on you a list twice
as long as usual, just give you two months of info for the price of one.
And that, is quite a bargain...
After last year's campaign to elect him for the UK's Eurovision representative came to nothing, it was good
to see Kid Carpet close the chapter and carry on with the making of his new album. Kid was mixing tracks
in The Engine Room over a few days at the start of the year with producer Ben Hillier.
for Miloco magazine's interview with Kid Carpet. After a hefty stretch towards the end of last year,
The Rascals finished mixing their debut album in January with Ben Hillier and
Interface's Ferg Peterkin. The Engine Room has also recently had the company of one
of trip-hop's finest talents, Portishead's Beth
Gibbons, who was working with Interface engineer Joe Hirst in Miloco One.
Upstairs in Miloco Two, and the first two months of the year were more-or-less used up by two
lengthy sessions. First of all, Vanessa Brown followed on from her Toyshop sessions
in late 2007 with Interface producers Steve Dub & Segs, and Interface engineer Ben Thackeray,
and then came MFU who with producer/engineer Tyson Speed scooped up a good few weeks of Toyshop time.
Miloco-regular Charles Campbell-Jones came by for the first time in 2008 for a day or two with
Ben Thackeray engineering.
A scattering of bands kicked off the The Square's year, starting with The Egg who
checked in for a few days with Bruno Ellingham producing and Miloco's Dan Rejmer
engineering. In quick pursuit was Kieran Hebden and his band Four Tet who came in the good company of Interface engineer
Mark Rankin, and then came Polina who worked a few sessions over two months
with producer Alan Boyd and Interface engineer Finn Eiles. Finn was kept busy up at
Hoxton, as he also engineered several sessions with the London ska-punk band The King Blues.
The sessions were produced by the legendary Clive Langer. Click here
for The King Blues' interview with Miloco's MILC magazine.
Castle Donington won't just be famous for its motor racing when Late of the Pier come into
the limelight. The Nottinghamshire synth-rockers got things off to a soaring start in Miloco
Four with the tracking of their
debut album with producer Erol Alkan and engineer Jimmy Robertson. After several weeks
of them, Blackbud got a chance to take London's coolest tracking studio for a spin.
They too used up a few weeks with producer Mike Crossey at the helm.
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly spent a couple of days mixing in The Yard in January. He was
accompanied by young hotshot producer/engineer Alex Dromgoole. Alex was on duty again
when Ben Esser came back to Miloco for the first time since his Pool session last year.
The start of February saw Ruelin spend a weekend mixing up in
Highbury with Interface's Matt Foster. Other names who popped into The Yard included
Video Nasties, The Thirst and Hadouken!, who were working with Interface's
latest addition, Iain Gore.
Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong continued their session through into the New Year with
producer Mike Crossey, and were followed by Acute who were in with long-term
Miloco client, producer Dave Eringa. The most of February saw the world-conquering
Coldplay in our Kentish Town mix room with producer Markus Dravs, but before they did
Belgian band Arsenal grabbed a few days with Interface engineer Pete Hofmann.
The Pool didn't hang around in attracting more fantastic bands to its unique tracking ways.
January saw Bloc Party book out a week with producer Paul Epworth
and his regular engineer, Interface's Mark Rankin. Mark was back not long after with
the exciting Raygun and the Adjitators and producer Dimitri Tikovol. Clearly enjoying himself
in The Pool, Mark became a regular fixture at the end of February too, when the legendary Gil Norton
came in to produce his latest project, In Case Of Fire.
Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince, better known as The Kills got the ball rolling on a star-studded
start to Sofa Sound's year. A week later came the ever-prevailing Stereophonics who grafted
away over a few days with producer Jim Lowe. Clocking up a good couple of weeks next were
Starsailor, who were in the fine company of producer par-excellence, Steve Osbourne
and Interface engineer Ferg Peterkin.
... and before we could even ponder over the mysterious extra day which February brings once in a while,
we found ourselves rocketing through the month of March, and my word it's going quickly.
You can assume, as always, that we'll be in touch next month to tell you all about it.

The Yard Refurbishment
We sent a bunch of lads with a healthy combination of brain, skill and muscle up to Highbury for a burst
of refurbishment work on The Yard - and what a job they did!! Having listened to various
client requests, we've made many fantastic
improvements including new fabric panels, floor, and
glass door in the booth, as well as new air conditioning units in both the booth and
control room. There is also a new work station at the far end of the room with a pull-out Protools rig, plus a scattering of
other little upgrades. So if we dare say so ourselves, it's now looking rather
snazzy - all the more reason for you to scurry on up there for some Yard therapy.

These New Puritans - 'Beat Pyramid'
This mysterious band from Southend-on-Sea have been bubbling under the surface for a while, but

along the way.
Gareth Jones and These New Puritans recorded Beat Pyramid in The Toyshop and Square in 2007.
