The Black Rock Studio...

The Black Rock studio is a beautifully designed and crafted creative space, featuring a variety of different areas making it a first-rate facility for both tracking and mixing projects. It was designed by the world class studio designer Roger D'Arcy of Recording Architecture. The studio is accessed through its own external entrance, which leads you into a large 40 sq meter day-lit control room looking out over the sea. At the centre of the room is a pristine SSL 9080 J Series console with Ultimation and Total Recall. The desk is joined by an awesome monitoring setup comprising Genelec 1035B speakers and a choice of KRK E8 and Yamaha NS10 nearfield monitors. A Protools HD2 rig runs on an Apple MAC PRO. There is a good selection of outboard including Neve 1081 Classic pre-amps, Manley, Focusrite and Avalon dynamics and a variety of FX processers. Clients will have access to a great choice of microphones, including several Shure, Senheiser, Neumann and AKG models.

Situated next to the control room is the main recording area measuring 25 sq meters. This long and tall room features a unique 6-metre high arch-shaped ceiling which helps produce a fantastic sound. This room also features some sea-facing windows letting plenty of natural light into the space.

On the other side of the live room are two good-sized recording booths. The first is a specially designed 15 sq meter drum booth, capable of producing a fantastic range of colourful drum sounds. At the back of the booth is another window facing the sea and the pool. Through a large glass divide is a second booth serving as a great isolation space for recording vocals or guitars.

The design of the studio has allowed for fantastic visibility between all of the separate areas through a number of soundproof windows and thick glass doors. Each of the studio's rooms has the benefit of natural daylight and inspirational views. An additional unique feature which the studio will provide are special tielines connecting to Black Rock's bedrooms and outdoor spaces, providing clients with a whole host of other recording options.

The Island of Santorini...

Regularly referred to as 'The Island of the Gods', Santorini combines immense beauty with a mythical sprituality centred around the island's legendary volcanic nature. Santorini has become one of the most highly rated tourist destinations in the world. Year after year it is voted amongst the very best holiday islands, thanks to its spectacular physical allure, rich unspoiled culture and dynamic nightlife.

Santorini is made up of a group of volcanic islands located roughly 200 km southeast of Greece's mainland and 100 km north of Crete, and enjoys a superb climate throughout the year. Its breathtaking oceanic terrains were mainly shaped by the giant Minoan Eruption which occurred roughly 3,600 years ago at the height of Crete's Minoan era. The eruption led to the formation of Santorini's volcanic caldera, which is mostly filled by a vast lagoon. The tall, steep and beautifully imposing cliffs at the top of the caldera today provide the world famous views of the lagoon, neighbouring islands, Aegean Sea and its spectacular world-famous sunsets.

Modern-day Santorini has an estimated population of just over 13,000. Its principle settlement is Fira, built on the northeast segment of the caldera. There are several other small towns and villages spread across the islands, including the beautiful Oia and the former capital, Pyrgos. Santorini's settlements are famous for their cliff-top positions and traditional Cycladic features. These include the iconic and picturesque white houses and domes, and the many exquisite hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs clinging to the cliff edge and gazing across the lagoon.

Wherever you go in Santorini you are bound to stumble across remnants of its fascinating history, whether at the ancient Minoan ruins of Akrotiri or at the remains of the island's historic castles. Santorini's geological past has resulted in a remarkably unique volcanic atmosphere that attracts travellers from all over the world. Although the volcano is now dormant, signs of activity are still very much alive. The islands are blessed by spectacular beaches which are coated in soft black sand and beautiful red stone. A trip to the idyllic hot bathing springs on the uninhabited island of Nea Kameni in the centre of the lagoon is a stark reminder of the colossal volcanic force bubbling under the sea bed.

The incredible efforts taken to maintain Santorini's immense beauty and culture, has resulted in it becoming a truly exclusive and high-class holiday destination. Sitting peacefully in the calming blue waters of the south Aegean, a million miles away from any crowds, noise or pollution, this heavenly and enchanting island paradise remains to the day in a whole league of its own.

New Fisher Lane Bedrooms!

It really is a month to celebrate the residentials! Back in the UK, our Fisher Lane studio has recently finished its lengthy refurbishment of the two cottages and can now provide an accommodation 'par excellence' for all Fisher Lane clients. So being the photography enthusiasts we are, we've sent the snappers down to Surrey to capture the 8 beautiful bedrooms on film. You can now view some terrific images and short video tours of the 8 exquisite bedrooms and brand new bathrooms on the Miloco website.

The eight bedrooms are spread across two cottages neigbouring the studio. There is a selection of double and single rooms situated at both the front and the back of the house, which both provide fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. The master suite has its own en suite shower room, whereas the other rooms have shared bathroom amenities. Like the brand new bedrooms, the bathrooms in both cottages have been given a complete make-over, offering a stylish and relaxing setting to have a soak!

These brand new rooms now accompany the chic and spacious living areas at the cottages. Guests will have the sole use of a stunning open-plan living room and kitchen, beautifully-kept garden featuring a barbecue area, as well as the many acres of fields and woodlands immediately surrounding the houses. And that's without even mentioning the studio itself!! To find out more on the facility which now ranks amongst the very best UK residentials, click here: www.miloco.co.uk/fisherlane.

Studio Highlights

The fantastical month of February saw a real splurge of all sorts of clients to-ing and fro-ing from the studios, so we thought for this month's bulletin we'd pick out a selection of studio highlights from last month...

Starting at HQ, February saw the finishing stretches of The Enemy mixing sessions with producer Mike Crossey and engineer Jim Anderson. We wish them all the best for when album 2 comes out. Upstairs in The Toyshop we enjoyed the company of Blackbox Revelation and P'Nau, and through the garage into the creative depths of The Pool were the likes of The Kills, Noah and the Whale and Andre Jarema.

Over in East London, our legendary vintage tracking room The Garden was having a dynamic month as usual. The fast-rising Little Comets were in first with producer Dan Grech-Marguerat, and then shortly after him came Ana Silvera who worked a number of sessions last month with our very own Daniel Rejmer engineering. Around the corner on the vibrant Hoxton Square, The Square studio was occupied mostly by Die So Fluid, tracking their next album with producer Mark Williams, and Gemma Ray who was working with Interface engineer Ben Thackeray.

The North London pack were prowling for talent too! Our good friend VV Brown was back at Miloco with producers Steve Dub and Segs, this time at our Kentish Town Neve room Musikbox. The studio also ushered in producer Guy Massey who returned this time with Mountain of One, and the great Groove Armada who were in with Miloco engineer Oli Wright. Down the road in Highbury, The Yard enjoyed the company of Brixton band The Thirst, and Cumbernauld's Dykeenies. Both bands were working with producer James Lewis.

Further anti-clockwise on the map, Miloco West met Kanye West, when he popped into the Mr Hudson session at Assault & Battery 2, which was engineered by Miloco's Catherine Marks. Across the hall in the UK's best mix room, Alpha Centauri, Detroit Social Club were back with engineer Richard Wilkinson, and Madness also re-visited with Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley and Interface's Finn Eiles. Finally, further South in Chiswick, Hugh Padgham's Sofa Sound was booked out for the month by the great man himself.

... and that was the month that was. Another massive thanks to all who came our way last month, we sincerely hope you enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed yours...

For all bookings enquiries on the studios call Linda on 020-7232-0008 or email linda@miloco.co.uk

Padgham's 'Islands in the Stream'!

We simply cannot wrap up proceedings before offering our upmost congratulations to Hugh Padgham and all those involved in the massive Comic Relief single 'Islands In The Stream', which stormed to number one in last week's charts. The track was produced by Hugh at Sofa Sound, and features Gavin and Stacey stars Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones, and of course the great Tom Jones on guest vocals.

The single has already clocked up a staggering 5 million downloads all in the good name of charity, and we feel that that is certainly something to shout about. Well done everyone!
