Miloco 5-a-side 2008 - Let battle commence!
You thought it was all over, it ain't yet. So the nation won't be uniting in red and white this summer for a merry jaunt off to Austria and Switzerland, for yet another bout of 'squeaky bum time' football, no doubt concluding in a million grown men howling their sorrows into a St George's Cross handkerchief as the final sudden-death penalty lands in a country hamlet on the Franco-Swiss border, thus thwarting our dreams of glory. No, sadly none of that this year, but fear not, we think we might just have that perfect sporting remedy... Our 5-a-side football jamboree is heading to Battersea once again. Hoorah! For the fifth year running, we are inviting our good friends across the music industry to paint the open spaces of Battersea Park with their splendid footy colours to battle it out for the illustrious prize of free studio at one of Miloco's recording havens, plus the standard assortment of medals, champers and ale a'plenty. We simply cannot get enough of this summer event, and judging by the year-on-year increase in the number of entrees, nor can you! So it is time for you all to start rounding up your armies of brawny athletes - another day of fiery contest is fast approaching! This year's tournament will be taking place on Thursday 17th July, and team entries are already rolling in. If you wish to take part in this year's event, get in touch soon to enter a team. Call Richard on 020-7232-0008 or email richard@miloco.co.uk You can view further details on the whole tournament by clicking on the following link: Tournament Details Stay posted for plenty more info on this year's 5-a-side tournament...
Miloco Resource & LSS CoursesYou can now find on our website a brand new section under the name of Miloco Resource. We have built these pages to run alongside the exciting new project we are establishing with the London School of Sound, to run summer courses for aspiring engineers at our studios, to assist our ongoing search for new talent for the recording industry. The course, aimed at students with already a basic qualification in music technology, is spread across 5 dates where the subjects of drum, guitar and vocal recording will be taught, as well as two instalments of mixing production. The first set of dates have been confirmed as Saturday June 14, Sunday June 15, Friday June 20, Saturday June 21 and Sunday June 22. If you are interested in applying for the course, firstly please go to the Miloco Resource pages to see the entry requirements and course fees, and then contact the London School of Sound on 020 7354 7337 or email info@londonschoolofsound.co.uk. Meanwhile, elsewhere on the Resource pages you will find detailed guides written by a selection of our own engineers on chosen subjects concerned with day-to-day recording and mixing, as well as a growing catalogue of equipment reviews, details on Miloco's work experience programs, and of course further details on the Miloco/LSS courses... Step this way: www.miloco.co.uk/milocoresource. Hornsey programming room still going!!
Just to let you know the fantastic new programming room we've acquired in Hornsey is still up for grabs. Make sure you don't miss out, it won't stay around forever... Following the same concept as our other programming suites, here we are providing a space for you to fill with your own gear. Simple as that! The room does come with a small vocal booth, air-conditioning, storage space and an alarm system connected to the central station. There is use of a shared kitchen with the 5 other rooms based in the building, and there is a shared rec room for clients to use. Hornsey is wedged between the areas of Muswell Hill, Crouch End and Highgate, which positions it favourably for North London's great transport links in and out of the city. Both the Piccadilly line (Turnpike Lane), and Northern Line (Highgate, Archway) are nearby, meaning Camden and surrounding areas are minutes away by tube. The city centre and West End can be reached in less that 20 minutes. This cracking little room is going out at a very competitive rate of £800 / calendar month +VAT. Enquiries are already coming in thick and fast, so give us a bell to put yourself in the running. Call Vicki on 020-7232-0008, or email vicki@miloco.co.uk.
Studio HighlightsAs the sun finally starts to glisten over the rejoiced masses dwelling in this part of the world, let us not forget those who remain locked up for days on end making us the wonderful music that so often accompanies our summertime jollity. These people sacrifice the tans and beer gardens for destructive intakes of Kenco and the risk of developing sun phobias. Let's hear it for them, please... The Engine Room
Having wrapped up March in our flagship studio, Blackbud stuck around for another 2 weeks
to get April off to a flying start. They were mixing album tracks with producer Mike Crossey.
Pop's favourite idol Will Young popped in with producer Mike Spencer
and Interface engineer Matt Hyde, and then long-term Miloco members The Chemical
Brothers returned to Leroy Street once again for a stint of mixing with Interface's
Steve Dub. Steve stuck around for the final stretch of the month, mixing new material
for Audio Bullys.
The Toyshop
Upstairs in The Toyshop things started with Zarina who kept the ball rolling on from her
tracking session in March with producer Mike Hedges. Shortly after them came
Filthy Dukes and Rescue Cat, both working with Interface producers Steve Dub &
Segs. A week later the exciting new singer-songwriter Josephine Oniyama took
the room for a spin with producer Ben Hillier.
The Square
So Hoxton Square played home to one Jamie T last month. Jamie set up camp with regular
cohort and engineer Ben Coupland denying anyone else the right to experience the original
Milo studio. Not that we mind, rather look forward eagerly to the finished results of the
session. Cheers for the memories guys, may they long continue!
The Garden
Down the road in Shoreditch, The Garden was of course enjoying its newly refurbished self!
Punk Recruits were in early on with engineer Neil Comber, who together warmed the
place up for a massive three-week stay by veteran cockney-ska rebels Madness, tracking
new material with producer Clive Langer and Interface engineer Finn Eiles. There
was enough time for Archive to make the most of a week down at The Garden at the end of
the month. They were in the company of engineer Jerome Devois.
The Yard
The King Blues were back at the Yard for the start of April. Clive Langer and
Finn Eiles accompanied them before heading off to their Madness session. Following them
came two sessions with Esser and engineer Alex Dromgoole, and Mystery
Jets who were working with Interface engineer Ferg Peterkin. Reverend and the
Makers also came to Highbury with Interface's Mark Rankin on engineering duties, and
then Black Kids came in for the final week of SSL mixing. They were also with Alex
Dromgoole.
Musikbox
Late of the Pier continued the mixing of their first album with the trusty production
team of Erol Alkan and engineer Jimmy Robertson. They booked out a week before
Golden Silvers headed up to our Kentish Town Neve room to work with Mark Rankin.
Vanessa Brown ventured over to Musikbox for the first time to continue mixing with
producer Mike Crossey, leaving the last few days of the month to Tommy Sparks.
Tommy was too in the fine production presence of Mr. Crossey.
The Pool
The fast-rising indie outfit Hatcham Social were tracking down in The Pool early on in
the month. They were on a session in our extreme recording room with engineer Andy
Sayvers. Not long after, we were introduced to an exciting new band called Marina
and the Diamonds, who put the room to good use with engineer Dom Morley. Just as
they were packing up to leave, news came in that Bloc Party were heading our way with
speed. They, with producer Paul Epworth and Interface engineer Mark Rankin, saw
out the rest of the month. Plenty more to come from the Bloc boys.
Sofa Sound
The final haunt of the studio crawl is Sofa Sound. Late of the Pier had booked out some
time at our sumptuous Chiswick studio before heading over to Musikbox. Erol and Jimmy
were of course pulling the strings. Producer Guy Massey brought his new project
Prego to Sofa Sound for a good stint of mixing, and then Mystery Jets, like LOTP,
stopped in before heading up to Kentish Town. Towards the end of the month we had
Franko book out the studio with producer/engineer Jim Lowe.
So congrats to all those who succeeded in making April yet another memorable month in the world of Miloco. At the time of print, we are currently steamrolling through the month of May, and simply can't wait to tell you about it all next month. Watch this space. Over-and-out. For bookings and enquiries for any of the Miloco studios, call Vicki at the office on 020-7232-0008 or email vicki@miloco.co.uk.
