Engineer / Producer Round-upWhat have our squadron of acoustic dare devils been up to over the last few months, you ask? Well, as always they've been busy as brilliant bees both at Miloco and many studios across Europe and the wider world. If you ever want any of them to enhance one of your projects - no matter what studio you're booked into - don't hesitate to give us a call on the usual number. Right, those recent projects...
For a lengthy butcher's at the boys' full CVs and to sample a few of their tunes online, head www.miloco.co.uk/management (you can also listen to a delightful selection of the same via Miloco Radio - you'll find it in the top right corner of our site). And if you find yourself hankering for their expert services - even for projects not based at Miloco - just call us today on the usual number. Studio Round-up"Och! M'towbar!" And, like a distraught Scottish motorist, October was lost in the rearview mirror... It was good though. Ace in fact. To accompany the brief burst of germ-killing cold, we snuggled up to Arctic Monkeys in The Garden, swotted for our Science NVQ with The Chemical Brothers and said 'hello and how are you' to a right merry band of other poppy, rocky, beaty, indie, metally, folky, hip hoppers. Specifically... Miloco One - The Neve Room
We started the month in the company of the delectable Charles Campbell Jones, whose debut album, Wasting The Duke, is getting a
hatful of favorable attention. He was in with Ben Thackeray, mixing a new single. Next up, we had bright young things Crash Car Burn,
here in the company of Matt Hyde, mixing single tracks. And from then onwards it was the return of our oldest, finest and most loyal
customers, the ever-green and ever-great Chemical Brothers, in mixing their latest album with Steve Dub.
Miloco Two - The Toyshop
Upstairs in our gadget-filled den, Ali Love continued work on his album with Steve Dub & right hand man Seggs,
before Skepta popped in to see us for a day apiece with Joe Hirst on the Pro Tools. After that we
had a few sessions with the excellent Whitey in the company of regular patron Robert Harder, whilst Vita Ross
returned to see us with Ben Thackeray manning the desk. And there was still time for unsigned subcontinental
sweethearts, India Beau, to discover for themselves why The Toyshop really is the most popular creative space in town.
Miloco Three - The Square
Over in Hoxton, things kicked off in fine style with Klaxons, before The Wolfmen burst in for a week's post-Adam & The Ants
action, tracking a whole host of album tracks with producer Steve Musters. The Vita Ross crew were next in, again in the company
of Miloco's Mr Thackeray, before first Kubichek! and then them there Bloc Party fellas came to pay us a visit, putting the finishing
touches to their sessions from The Garden. Pull Tiger Tail were next up, tracking for their album with Simon Barny Barnicott, and our
own Finn Eiles engineering. Finn then hung about to track b-sides for Goodbooks and album tracks for Alberta Cross, the latter again
in the company of Barny. And last but not least Big Issue competition winners The Takedown swung by with Ferg Peterkin.
Miloco Four - The Garden
Hey, hey! They're the Monkeys! From a van with Sheffield licence plates, young men with hefty tunes emerged. Producer James Ford waved
them in through a Shoreditch doorway and the Arctic Monkeys started work on their second album with Mike Crossey engineering...
Pre-Monkeys those other UK chart and festival darlings, Bloc Party, came to the end of their two and a half weeks of unleashing
b-sides par excellence in the company of Eliot James. And we also had time for a little D.O.E., in tracking their album with
Justin Grayston and our own Ben Thackeray. As if you needed it underlining, there really is no finer place to track and mix
your band, you know...
Miloco Five - The SSL
Leon Jean Marie was the first fine set of tonsils through our Islington door, quickly followed by Ms Dynamite, a little
Polytechnic and then old buddies Soho Dolls, the latter in the company of mixman Steve Lyon. The Fridays then came in for
day (confusingly on a Saturday) before a few more quick fire sessions came and went with Orpheus, Play Mo Bitch (with Mr
Matt Foster), Klaxons and Howie B. Unsigned land-lubbers Fear of Flying then took time out from supporting Jamie T to
mix a single with Max Dingle, before Jet and Groove Armada (with new man Mark Rankin) saw out the month in style.
Miloco Seven & Eight - Musikbox & The Pool
Denim dungarees and a dainty dash of oil on a rouged cheek. Some things never go out of style. Well, regrettably Natalie
Imbruglia wasn't sporting this iconic look when she spent a week tracking with Ben Hillier in The Pool, but we forgave her.
Of course. Meanwhile, over in Musikbox, Ms Dynamite spent a fair few days in the company of Jimmy Ray Ruffin, The Soho Dolls
were back in with Robert Harder and the landlord himself, Pete Heller, spent two weeks reminding himself what a marvellous
studio he'd built... And back over in The Pool Cameron Meshell were busy tracking with post-B52s Dave McCracken producing
and Ferg Peterkin on engineering duty.
And with that another month bit the bullet. November's already shaping up to be a fine sequel, though, and if you want to sample the unique pleasures and vibe of the Miloco studio group (while there's still some of 2006 left), I strongly recommend you ring today before it's too late! Call Sophie today on 020 7232 0008, or drop her a line via sophie@miloco.co.uk. |

Hoxton programming room to rent!
New Engineer - Mark Rankin
Please join us in welcoming the excellent Mark Rankin into the Miloco family. Mark joins us from the sadly defunct Exchange recording Studio and brings with him a veritable goody bag of analogue and valve delights! They're currently living in The Pool where, in combination with Ben Hillier's collection, we now boast an astonishing one-off selection of recording paraphernalia (see The Pool's Amazing Gear below). Whilst at The Exchange, Mark was responsible for building their retro-styled studio and sourcing all their vintage analogue recording equipment. Some of the first clients through his door included some little known young hopefuls by the name of Bloc Party and The Futureheads - both in recording their first singles. Since then Mark's recorded with the likes of Acoustic Ladyland, Emiliana Torrini, Groove Armada, Polar Bear, Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid, The Lostprophets, The Littl'ans, Shy Child, Foy Vance, Kitty Daisy and Lewis, Fridge, Art Brut and The Bridge Gang. Plans are in the offing for Mark to build a new studio to house his delicious collection of gear in, but until that great day why not come and take advantage of him and his kit in Miloco's latest studio, The Pool. To peruse the man's CV, head here: Mark Rankin
In The City - 10% off for delegates
October's In The City was tremendous. Where else can you pop into a greasy spoon cafŽ and expect to bump into Chuck D? Or be invited into a double-decker bus temporarily transformed into an acoustic showcase venue? Or get lost in a sprawling cinema/shopping centre complex when trying to find a gig in a casino? So hello again to everybody we bumped into - it was a great few days. And for those of you who missed our glossy advert in the Delegate's Guide, please don't forget that you can still claim your 10% discount - just mention it next time you book. Our gig highlights? Absolutely and beyond doubt, Gideon Conn. We only caught 2.5 songs (as we'd been waylaid at an earlier gig), but by crikey he was superb. Our studios are at your mercy, Mr Conn!Ê We also saw old friends Ali Love (in the aforementioned curious casino) and Mr Hudson and The Library in the brilliantly sleazy and sweaty Night & Day Cafe. They were both superb of course. Other things of note included D'Morgan's fine pair of tonsils and the pretty cool Answering Machine. There were others, of course, but after a while I'm afraid the gins and Guinnesses rather addled our minds... Til next year...or maybe New York...
The Pool's amazing gear!
As promised last month, here are a few more tempters from The Pool's astonishing retro/analogue/valve-tastic equipment list. Painstakingly gathered together by producer Ben Hillier, it really is a delectable and unique collection. Indeed we guarantee you'll not find this refined selection of kit from around the world in any other studio on the planet! Some appetite whetting highlights: Chandler Line Mixer Germanium mic pre's AKG Harry D99c Lomo valve mics including 19A18 & 19A19 Roland 606 and 808 drum machines Neumann/Gefell CMV 563 A great range of ARP, Korg, Roland and Yamaha synths RCA 6203 Varicoustic mics Vortexian, Fender & Vox amps A range of bespoke/handmade/one-off pedals including: Frantone Electro Harmonix Z-vex Boss Lovetone
So there you have it. Quite a list, huh? But the thing is, there's just SO MUCH incredible equipment in here that you have to come and see it and play with it and fall in love with it for yourself. For the full list of all the delectable things you'll have at your disposal when you chose to record in The Pool, head here: Pool equipment list
