Another issue of MILC, Miloco's online magazine, hit the e-shelves last month. So hotfoot it over to our 'magazine'
tab (or click here) to see what all the fuss is about.
As with all previous issues it's packed to its creamy rafters with delectable tid-bits. Admittedly lacking in playboy bunnies, it makes up for a slender serving of lip-gloss and pneumatics by delivering "the greatest selection of finely honed music industry reportage," so said TimeOwt Magazine. And should you for a second doubt the word of that respected tome, this is what this issue's got in store for you: An interview with the delectable duo Maya and Toni from superhot band The Soho Dolls; a profile of the legendary producer-cum-musician Eric Drew Feldman (Captain Beefheart, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Charlotte Hatherley, Pere Ubu) and up and coming new fella on the block, Tom Farrer (80s trousers and delectable indie folk gubbins); all the up-to-the-minute breaking news on our recent clients inc. Kubichek!, The Blood Arm, Justin Timberlake and Mr Hudson; as well as Push The Button - your opportunity to click on a website link and make the world a better place (this month = Cancer Research) and a whole cowshed load of other treats. That link again? Brand new MILC Studio Profile - Musikbox
It boasts one of the few remaining Harrison Series 10 digitally controlled analogue 64-channel consoles, Pro Tools, ATC 3-way active monitoring, a great recording booth and day-lit control room, an extensive and extraordinary selection of analogue keyboards, as well as a large separate private lounge and kitchen. There's also more compressors, equalisers and effect units than you could wish for, so for the full low down click here. Recent clients include: Ms Dynamite, The Soho Dolls, X Press 2, Roots Manuva, Pete Heller (of course), Mr Hudson and the Library, The Bumblebeez and many more.

Other months now call us. But you treated us well and we remember you sweetly, so sweetly. You brought us friends old and new and tunes to warm the bitter winds of autumn, to shorten the shadows of summer's too swift departure... Miloco One - The Neve Room
In our premier mix facility we got things underway with the delectable Mr Hudson and The Library, in mixing with
Dave McCracken. A little later, the delicious Charlotte Hatherley came back to see us for a couple of days mixing
with Ben 'The Pool' Hillier. Next in, the splendid Maps came for some Flying Fader Neveing in the company of our
new friend Ken Thomas, before Ken stuck around for another three weeks of album mixing, this time with the
marvellous Engineers. Our own Ben Thackeray was running the Pro Tools on that one, with a little help from Matt Foster.
Head here for CVs: Ben Thackeray & Matt Foster Miloco Two - The Toyshop
The Toyshop loves its long-term residents. There's really no finer place to hole up a while and unleash your
visions. So whilst we still mourn for the dear-departed Jamie T, Ali Love has come to save us and woo our hearts
anew. Ali continued work on his album this month alongside Chemically Brother Steve Dub and the splendid Seggs.
Miloco's Joe Hirst was on hand with his engineering know how. There were a few slender hours when Ali wasn't
in residence though, during which Joe somehow managed to squeeze in an edit for Roll Deep whilst man of the moment,
Plan B, found himself remixed by JME.
A CV for a man named Hirst: Joe Miloco Three - The Square
Starting off the Hoxton sharking we welcomed those sharp-beamed Razorlight boys, in to track some b-sides with
our indie man par excellence, Finn Eiles. Finn then hung about to run the Tom Farrer sessions before everyone's
favourite 5-a-side combatants, Roll Deep, popped in for a few days when they weren't busy SSLing or Toyshopping.
Reluctants were then in tracking with producer Afreex and then we had some quick fire sessions with Howie B, Skepta
and Sunshine Underground as well as Julien Ribot doing strings and LFM doing drums. Next up, Phil Shipley was in for
a four day mix session before that there Bloc Party swung into town for a few days and, last but least, Scott
Matthews, popped in with producer Steve Musters.
A CV for you: Finn Miloco Four - The Garden
Lordy, The Garden had a quality line-up last month. Those quirky funsters Art Brut were first through the door
for three days of Dan Swift-produced loveliness, before Towers of London brought their noisy hair and bleached
guitars along and claimed their 5-a-side Football studio time prize. Producer Steve Lironi was then in tracking
drums with German artist Sandra (and swiftly proclaimed it the best drum sound he'd heard in yonks), before Sunshine
Underground slipped back into the basement of delights for Steve Dub to mix them up a little something. Crash Car
Burn were the next guys in, in the company with our Mr Matt Hyde, shortly followed by slices of Imran Hanif, old
buddies Mystery Jets, Steve Nardelli - in with producer Gerrard Johnson, and then Russian MTV favourites Band Eros,
who came all the way from Moscow to feast on our block-rocking facilities. The month was then seen out in the
rarified company of second-album-on-a-rolling-boil Bloc Party.
Some CV action: Matt Hyde Miloco Five - The SSL
Getting themselves in a right old Solid State last month were the electro pop rock manipulators (and cover stars of
the current issue of MILC), The Soho Dolls. They were continuing the Steve Lyon mix of their forthcoming Robert
Harder-recorded album. In between Dolls, Roll Deep swung by, as did Patrick Wolf for a Ben Hillier mix, up and
coming Kila Kela and Leon Jean Marie. Next up, Polytechnic took advantage of the mixing skills of Jay Reynolds
before the electric violin delights of Anna Phoebe paid us a visit under the watchful ears of Air's Nick Woolage.
And after all that there was only time left for some more Doho Solling and another lovely visit from Imran Hanif completing
the new BBC idents. And with that September in our Islington outpost was done.
Miloco Seven & Eight - Musikbox & The Pool
Musikbox started the month by waving off those Soho Dolls (with Robert Harder) as they departed for the mixing
charms of The SSL Room. We then had the chance to welcome back the-lady-whose-name-it's-impossible-not-to-say-
in-a-sing-song-voice, Ms Dynamite (eee-hee), as she checked out the lofty retro electro spec of Pete Heller's
top-notch facility. And then, like a delightfully homesick boomerang, those Dolls were back again to see out the
month. Meanwhile over in The Pool there was much excitement at the residence of Mr Stephen Fretwell, in tracking
new material with Ben Hillier and our own Ferg Peterkin. Charlotte Hatherley then stuck her head in for a day
before Stephen popped back for a few days, closely followed by Brighton-adopting, cartoon-drawing, top tune-penning
The Maccabees, back with us for some Ben Hillier attention and, likewise, some Peterkin engineering. And then,
just as the month was coming to a close, The Dead 60s and Foy Vance both squeezed in visits to what is fast becoming
the place for unique, inventive and supreme recording. Foy Vance was working with our new engineer on the block Rankin
but more about him next month....
For Mark Rankins CV: Rankin And that was that. Quite a line up yet again, I think you'll all agree. Our ever-expanding range of studios is proving an irresistible lure for countless top acts from all conceivable genres and, if you haven't checked us out yet, you quite clearly should. To do this just call the lovely Sophie on 020 7232 0008, or drop her a line via sophie@miloco.co.uk We look forward to seeing you soon. |

Valve Neumann U47 Upgrade
A word to all you microphone fanatics out there: The Garden's Neumann U47 mic has been splendidly upgraded. In its previous incarnation it was a rather curious sounding Nuvistor Neumann U47, but it's now been magically transformed into an utterly delicious valve mic. The expert hands of Ashley Styles at Saturn Sound are responsible, and his hours of dedicated TLC (upgrading it to a valve and adding a new capsule) have utterly transformed it. So next time you're down The Garden rest assured you'll achieve supreme quality vocal sounds, all thanks to Ashley and our new and improved valve U47. If you have any vintage valve microphones that are in need of some similar one-on-one expertise, then send them over to Ashley Styles at Saturn Sound. For more details head here: www.saturn-sound.com
New Staff - Alex Richards
Another month at Miloco, another wonderful worker bee added to the honey-toned hive... This month's ready, willing and able recruit is one Alex Richards. He's joined us as runner and budding assistant and here are some of his own words: "My first couple of weeks here at Miloco have been great. I'm working with some lovely people and the atmosphere here is awesome. One of my highlights so far has been meeting Mr Ben Hillier. I have been interested in his work for a long time and in person he's a really nice, insightful guy. I may have had a few teething problems with the dishwasher but I'm really enjoying my job and I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for me." [A couple of invoices from Acme Dishwasher Repair and Mop Rental Inc, I'd imagine. Ed]
The Pool's astonishing gear
Miloco 8 is The Pool, our latest studio, and my word has it got tongues wagging, strummers strumming and drummers drumming. It's a massive space with a massive sound and it's designed to be the most relaxing, flexible and accommodating studio in town. Full to bursting with Ben Hillier's extensive and fabulous array of equipment, its 8 metres of head room and mammoth 80 sq m of floor space enable musicians to spread out, chill out and feel utterly at home. We've amassed a little list of equipment highlights to get you salivating, as recommended by Miloco engineer Ferg Peterkin and, recently arrived from The Exchange, Mark Rankin (who's brought a whole heap of his own toys with him too): A few teasers from Mark's collection: 8x Telefunken v72 valve pre amps - "these could warm up a polar bear's broken heart" 6x Telefunken v76 valve mic pre amps - "the Rolls-Royce of mic pre's" Ribbon mic collection including RCA 44DX - "the Elvis mic" and vintage Coles 4038's - "great for drum overheads" All original Neumann U47 valve mic - "the classic vocal mic" EAR Valve EQs and compressors - Pultec and Fairchild emulations "now classics in their own right" RCA BA6A Limiter - "well nice" And Mark's particularly fond of Ben Hillier's: "amazing collection of Lomo valve mics, and the Chandler mixer is a great summing mixer for the Pro Tools rig. Basically, the room sounds absolutely amazing." And Ferg had this to add: "Yes, the room itself is unique and sounds absolutely astonishing. But add to that Ben's great selection of valve and solid state pre amps, EQs and compressors, and a mic collection that you just won't be able find anywhere else in the world and you've got a truly great environment. My favourites of Ben's so far include the Studer desk and mic pre amps - great for fat drums, the pair of Germanium pre-amps from Chandler, as well the 19A18 Lomo mic that just sounds ace through the desk." Well, what are you waiting for? If I were you I'd take these guys' advice and get down to The Pool sharpish to check out all that wonderful gear for yourself...
