Here's to the bride and groom!
Sunday 7th October 2007 will go down as a special day for all at Miloco, but for no one more-so than our studio manager Sophie and engineer Mark, who tied the knot in style at Home House in Portman Square. After a fantastic ceremony and dinner, which included a thigh-slapping best man's speech divulging in Mark's teenage enchantment with Kurt Cobain (sorry Mark, that should be it for now), the newlyweds were joined by a hoard of jubilant Miloco staff members, who it seems were "high-spirited" enough to categorically fail to deduce which way the camera was actually pointing in the company photographs (see below)!!! So please join us in raising a glass to Mr. and Mrs. Mark and Sophie Rankin. Congratulations guys, you made it!!! (p.s. Sophie if you get to read this from your tropical honeymoon paradise, you may be relieved to hear that the office are just about holding it together, for now). xxxxx
Cuts for Christmas! So the traditional advent season that October brings has arrived. The world celebrates with the rich getting richer and everyone else preparing themselves for an AMEX-related panic period for every month in the foreseeable future. Oh the joys of festivity! The Samaritans are also out, which brings us to our own little good deed for the winter... We have taken it upon ourselves to relieve the financial strain suffered at this time of year by oh-so-many, and to bring forward our winter sales to before Christmas Day, meaning that our wonderful clients can eat and drink excessively in the name of the lord knowing that they have completed their Christmas single's a-sides, b-sides, bonus tracks, the lot, for fantastically low prices. Sit down and strap in, you should enjoy this... Our festive studio offers are as follows... From 17th December to 23rd December: Studio 1: The Neve VR Room - £500 / day discounted from £800 / day Studio 2: The Toyshop - £175 / day discounted from £250 / day Studio 3: The Square - £275 / day discounted from £400 / day Studio 4: The Garden - £400 / day discounted from £600 / day Studio 5: The SSL Room - £275 / day discounted from £400 / day Studio 7: Musikbox - £400 / day discounted from £600 / day Studio 8: The Pool - £400 / day discounted from £600 / day and from 24th December to 6th of January when they're even lower: Studio 1: The Neve VR Room - £250 / day discounted from £800 / day Studio 2: The Toyshop - £150 / day discounted from £250 / day Studio 3: The Square - £225 / day discounted from £400 / day Studio 4: The Garden - £250 / day discounted from £600 / day Studio 5: The SSL Room - £225 / day discounted from £400 / day Studio 7: Musikbox - £250 / day discounted from £600 / day Studio 8: The Pool - £250 / day discounted from £600 / day So to sum-up, Miloco's two week Christmas shebang gets going on December 17, and we are taking bookings as of now. Even though, believe it or not, there is still the best part of three months to go, it should be stated that to get your hands on some of this studio time you should get in touch ASAP, or else the presents will be unwrapped by someone else, leaving you with nowt, and hence spoiling the big guy's b-day. Give Vicki a ring at the office on 020-7232-0008 or email vicki@miloco.co.uk and take us up on these incredible offers. Seasons Greetings to all! The Garden: A veggie plot becomes a bed of roses!
Check it out! That should give you some ooing and aahing practice for bonfire night! Ok, so for those familiar with our beloved Shoreditch tracking room, you may agree that however gifted it is in many areas, looks perhaps isn't one of them, bless it. However, this is no longer the case. We have sent the decorators in for a long overdue makeover, and it turns out that the good old Garden scrubs up quite nice, as illustrated in this spectacular piece of photography before your very eyes. So for the record, we have started on the control room by rebuilding the walls and ceiling, putting in some very cool LED lights, moving the noisy bits of equipment out (you won't ever again feel the urge to smash that irritatingly loud fan!), and replaced the fabrics which has enhanced the sound even further. We have also installed a great Hearback foldback system, and added a new Pro Tools workstation making the room feel more spacious - convenient for tracking those big brass bands!! It's all part of an ongoing revamp project, and we will now be turning our attention to refurbishing the vocal booth. Oh yes, we've also installed a terrific Lexicon 224 XL reverb unit in the studio, but undoubtedly topping the lot are those ravishing flowers! Pretty. The East End's leading tracking studio just got better, so roll up to take the new-look Garden for a spin. It won't disappoint. Call Vicki at the office on 020-7232-0008 or email vicki@miloco.co.uk. Studio HighlightsOver to the studios then, and whom did we find gracefully loitering around throughout the month of September? Well we had stars of present, stars of the future and certain members of the rock aristocracy - no less - fill up the time last month, which makes it extremely enjoyable for us to now pick out a few of the juicy bits. Here's to September's studio highlights. Miloco One - The Neve Room
The Rushes followed on from their session at the end of August to see in the new month,
as they continued to track their new album with producer Victor Van Vugt. Regular
Nevesters the Audio Bullys came in for a few days not long after with engineer Steve Dub
to mix a single, and then Dubby was back a day later with partner-in-crime Segs to
continue work on the Malakai album, as well as with with up-and-coming reggae artist
Ainzli Jones. They were joined on all counts by Interface engineer Ben Thackeray.
An engineer CV: Ben Thackeray Miloco Two - The Toyshop
It was great to have the Mercury-nominated Bat For Lashes upstairs in The Toyshop at the
beginning of September, mixing a single with producer / engineer Dave Dix. Shortly after
Hadouken! took over the room for a couple of days with engineer Jimmy Robertson,
and then the latest stars out of Southend, Ipso Facto, popped in` with Miloco's
James Aparicio to do some mixing. James returned for a couple of days towards the end of
the month to track an album with classical guitarist, Stewart French.
Miloco Three - The Square
Over the river and up the road, Hoxton Square was warming up with the first of several Metros
sessions throughout the month. They were overdubbing with producer Baxter Dury and
Interface engineer Finn Eiles. The Square also enjoyed a short but sharp revisit of
Gallows who with Ben Thackeray were remixing b-sides, and then The Draytones
came in for a few days of mixing, accompanied by the maestro Finn. The remaining days saw Idle Lovers occupying
the room with producer Premen Underhill.
Another CV: Finn Eiles Miloco Four - The Garden
Just as The Garden was catching its breath after August's hullabaloo, we threw in no other than
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds to carry on burning the oil. They were in with producer
Nick Launay and engineer Kevin Paul. New band on the block
Reverend & The Makers were in a couple of days later to do some tracking and overdubbing
with Jagz Kooner and Jon Gray. Mystery Jets have already sampled the delights of
our Pool and Sofa Sound studios this summer, but last month they went Gardening for a week
with Erol Alkan producing and Al O Connell engineering. Finally, ensuring the
madness would never die out in our Shoreditch tracking room were, well Madness, funnily
enough. The cockney faves were in for a couple of days with producer Clive Langer and
engineer Finn Eiles, to track and mix a new single.
Miloco Five - The SSL
Our regular SSL clients have reported that the studio hugely benefited from a visit by master
acoustician Nick Whittaker last month, who gave the room a well-deserved monitor tweak. First in
to enjoy the hugely-improved sound were The Tunics, who kicked off September with producer / engineer James Lewis, and were pretty much in
the studio for most of the month, mixing their album. However a few days were spared for others
to use, and used they were by Brendan Campbell and producer Mike Crossey, as well
as the Franco-American songstress Luna Paris, who saw out the month in the fine company
of Interface engineer Martin Jenkins.
Another CV: Martin Jenkins Miloco Seven & Eight - Musikbox & The Pool
Before heading over to The Neve, Malakai, Steve Dub and Segs had a couple
of sessions in Musikbox in early September, with Interface's Joe Hirst on engineering
duties. Then all the way from sunny Spain came Luz Casal who came intent on staying, and
hence used up the rest of the month with producer Darren Allison.
Peckham's finest psychedelic rock band, The Lea Shores, had The Pool buzzing at the start of the month, laying tracks with producer Ben Hillier and engineer Ferg Peterkin. They spent a relaxing two weeks at Miloco's favourite getaway, whilst Ferg on the other hand set-up camp for the whole of the month, as after The Lea Shores he worked with The Horrors, Josh Weller, and also on a Tunng remix, in the Pool. Last two CVs: Joe Hirst and Ferg Peterkin And that was the last we saw of the British summer, seen out with another great bunch of musicians at Miloco. Looking ahead, it seems we have an exciting start to the chilly months. Stay tuned for next month's round-up, it'll be a cracker! Here's to the bride and groom!
Introducing... Vicki!!
Please join us in welcoming Vicki Dempsey to the Miloco gang. Vicki has previously worked as a session singer and at Sanctuary Records, and will now be working alongside Sophie in managing studio bookings. Some of you will already have met her over the phone, and others i'm sure will do before long!!
New EMT 140 plate at Musikbox
Great news! Due to popular demand we have installed an outstanding EMT 140 plate at our Kentish Town mix room, Musikbox. Yes, after much sweating and strained backs the Miloco boys coaxed one of the huge plates from its old Leroy Street home and delivered it to NW5, bolstering the studio's already exceptional arsenal. (Lets hope it doesnt try to find its way back home!). To experience the warmth of the classic plate reverb sound, phone Vicki on 020-7232-0008 or email vicki@miloco.co.uk .
Latest Releases
Released 17th September 2007 Turin Brakes - 'Dark On Fire'
After becoming synonymous for providing the soundtrack to scenes in The OC where devishly good-looking Los Angelean teens glaze their golden skin on the Pacific sand, before heading to a ludicrously unrealistic house party ending in a spoilt brat accidently blowing his mate's leg off with a rifle, Turin Brakes return to the studio once more. For their consistently brilliant fourth album, The Brakes boys have drafted in Kings Of Leon / Ray Lamontagne / Ryan Adams producer Ethan Johns. Turin Brakes and Ethan Johns were in Miloco 8: The Pool tracking the new album in January 2007. www.turinbrakes.com Released 17th September 2007 Dykeenies - 'Nothing Means Everything'
The hotly anticipated debut LP from the Glasgow-based Dykeenies has landed. Steered by the fantastic indie rock producer Dave Eringa, the album is packed full of fast and feisty indie tracks. If you're wondering if 'Nothings Means Everything' means, erm, anything, grab yourself a copy, put on your dancing slippers and find out. Dykeenies and Dave Eringa were in The Neve in February 2007 mixing the album. www.thedykeenies.com Released 10th September 2007 The Chemical Brothers - 'Salmon Dance'
Possibly one of the most outlandish tunes The Chems have ever conjured up, 'Salmon Dance' is reminiscent of any old nursery rhyme about a fish, warped through some tripped-out time machine to when martians were celebrating 1960s psychedelia. Brilliant. 'Salmon Dance' is the second single from The Chemical Brothers' 'We Are The Night' album, which was worked on throughout 2006 and 2007 in The Neve, Toyshop and Garden with engineer Steve Dub. www.thechemicalbrothers.com Released 10th September 2007 Dykeenies - 'Stitches'
Another dance-floor filler for all those jiving indie kids, from one of Scotland's hottest new bands. Taken from the smashing debut album, 'Nothing Means Everything' (see above). Dykeenies were occupying The Neve VR room in February 2007, mixing album tracks with producer and engineer Dave Eringa. www.thedykeenies.com Released 3rd September 2007 Battle - 'Break The Banks'
We've all been betting with ourselves for some time that Battle would be a brilliant band, and now with the release of their full-length debut proving they are, we all win!!! 'Break The Banks' will be remembered as one of 2007's biggest critical successes, mark our wise words. Battle were tracking 'Break The Banks' in The Garden in February 2007. Jeff Knowler produced and engineered. www.thisisbattle.com Released 13th August 2007 Tinchy Stryder - 'Star In The Hood'
With his days of collaborating with scene veteran Dizzee Rascal seemingly behind him, Tinchy is finally taking on the grime world solo, much to the satisfaction of many fans who have been waiting ever-so patiently. His album title speaks accurately of the boy's talents. Tinchy Stryder was in Musikbox in December 2006, mixing the single 'Breakaway' which you'll be pleased to hear features on the album. www.myspace.com/ tinchystryder To check out more of the Miloco releases of 2007, please look this way: www.miloco.co.uk/news/ newreleases |
