Introducing Fisher Lane
Residential recording one hour from London...

A very happy autumn to you all! This month, to celebrate the arrival of a brand new season, us busy bees at Miloco have been mustering up another fantastic studio treat for the world. October sees the grand unveiling of Fisher Lane Studios, the legendary SSL tracking and mix studio in the heart of Surrey, which as of now will be operating as the UK's latest and greatest residential retreat.

The Studio...

Designed by the legendary studio acoustician Sam Toyoshima, Fisher Lane Studios is based in the beautiful Surrey countryside, just outside the village of Chiddingfold near Guildford. For nearly thirty years some of the biggest names in the music world have frequently used the studio to record and mix countless multi-million selling albums, amongst them Genesis, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, The Cure and Mike + The Mechanics, to name a few.

Immersed in the beautiful rural surroundings of the area, this inspirational studio is built around an expansive control room and dynamic live space. The live areas consist of a spacious main recording room boasting a beautiful Steinway Grand Piano, and a large stone booth perfect for creating an exciting range of ambient drum sounds. Clients will also have affordable access to a vast range of top-quality backline gear, including rare and wonderful guitars, synths and amplifiers. On the other side of the glass divide, the studio's massive and luxurious control room is based around a pristine SSL E series console, which is joined by a powerful Westlake HR1 monitoring system, together providing a wonderful mixing facility. There is a great selection of outboard, and the option to record to both Protools and tape, and just to add that extra bit of quality, Fisher Lane also boasts a spacious programming suite formed out of the studio's original control room, which can be setup as an additional editing room. Like all the classic Sam Toyoshima studios, Fisher Lane benefits from having visibility between all of its areas.

The building also comprises a spacious and leisurely recreation area where clients can unwind in front of Sky TV. There is an adjoining kitchenette kitted out with all the mod cons, and stunning views out over the countryside.

The Residential...

This summer Fisher Lane acquired two traditional country cottages neighbouring the studio. We've stripped the cottages down to the bone, and completely refurbished them to bring them up to an immaculate modern standard. They now provide a stylish and relaxing accommodation for up to eight people.

The first cottage houses the main open-plan kitchen and lounge area. This chic hang-out is where clients can watch TV, and of course enjoy the delicious daily meals cooked and served by the excellent in-house chef. A set of French windows open-up onto a terraced barbecue area, large garden lawn, and of course the huge expanse of meadows and woodlands beyond, making a great setting for a summer afternoon's relaxing!

The eight bedrooms are spread out across both cottages. There are three spacious bedrooms upstairs in the first cottage, and one situated on the ground floor. The master bedroom has the sole use of an en-suite shower room, toilet and basin. The remaining four bedrooms are in the second cottage. Three are situated on the first floor of the house, and the fourth occupies a cozy loft conversion. Those who get their forty winks at the back of the house will wake up to glorious morning views of the roaming fields and woodlands, whilst at the front you can look out over the cottages' picturesque driveway and front garden.

Beyond the cottage's beautifully kept garden are of course several acres of land also belonging to Fisher Lane. There is a large paddock at the back of the garden which is used to graze sheep, and which leads through to the woods. There are also several large lawns spread between the studio building and cottages, and a number of beautiful and imposing oak trees. You'll not find a more creative and tranquil setting in such close proximity to the city...

A Goodbye and Thank You...

This month we're wishing a fond farewell to Sophie Rankin, who after several fantastic years at Miloco is moving on to pastures new. We'd like to take a moment to thank Soph for all her brilliant work as both our bookings manager, and more recently as the head of the Interface producer and engineer roster. Sophie will be continuing to manage Mark Rankin, who we also say a big thanks to for his time with us.

Sophie will now be contactable on sophie@heromanagement.co.uk. We wish both Sophie and Mark all the best in everything they do in the future.

Studio Highlights

It was business as usual across the rooms in September. All corners of the city were bursting with Miloco studio activity, and here's a few of the highlights.

We very much enjoyed the company of Razorlight and producer Mike Crossey last month, as they wrapped up mixing the forthcoming Slipway Fires album at our flagship Engine Room in SE1. We can't wait to have a listen come November! Upstairs, Steve Dub and Segs were grafting away as usual in The Toyshop, producing the forthcoming debut album by Kid British, with Miloco engineer Laurence Aldridge. The troop moved downstairs into The Engine Room towards the end of the month. The Pool was star-mingling as always, firstly with those Glaswegian giants Travis, and then with Bloc Party, who were filming a documentary in the same studio where they tracked new album, Intimacy.

Northbound across the Thames, our East London hubs were too having a wail. The Garden welcomed Fryars at the start of the month. The band were tracking material with producer Luke Smith and Interface's Ferg Peterkin. Following them came the return of Late of the Pier, who were back in Shoreditch with producer Erol Alkan and engineer Jimmy Robertson. Round the corner at Hoxton Square, September enjoyed the company of Jamie T, MIA and the ever-so lovely Natalie Imbruglia. Nice to see them all back at Miloco!

The North London contingency was having a jam-packed month as well. Our Highbury SSL room The Yard hosted all sorts of sessions, including Out From Animals who were working with producer James Lewis, Suzerain who were back at the studio working with producer Steve Lyon, and The Pepys who were in the fine company of Interface engineer Iain Gore. Our Kentish Town Neve room, Musikbox, opened the doors several times throughout the month to trance act Face2Face, who were accompanied by Interface engineer Pete Hofmann. The Fratelis popped by with Interface's Finn Eiles, as did Musikbox owner DJ Pete Heller who used a good week to work in his fine studio!

Lastly to our West London heavyweights. The Battery building was working around the clock, as The Hours indeed worked all hours in both Assault & Battery 2 and Alpha Centauri, with Flood and engineer Dan Austin. Further South in Chiswick, Stereophonics were back at Sofa Sound with Jim Lowe, and producer Mike Spencer also headed West to sample the delights of Hugh Padgham's SSL haven ...!

... and that was the month that was. Another massive thanks to all who came our way last month, we sincerely hope you enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed yours. Until another day...
